Default taking movies of the shows, etc...

Does Carnival mind if you take little video snippets of the shows you are watching? Not the entire thing, of course, just to get a little reminder of what you saw.

Video recording of any of the shows is not permitted. Flash photography is also not allowed for obvious reasons.

Take care,
Mike

Ok, thanks, didn't go to any shows on my 1st cruise so I wasn't aware of the policy.

The only exception we've found is the Crew Talent Show (not to be missed!). Your Carnival Capers should note "no taping" or "taping permitted" for each show.

While you are not allowed to tape their vegas style shows, you are allowed to tape any show in which the guests appear on the stage. This includes the magic shows and the hypnosis shows, etc that they put on. And it's funny because while they will definitely not tell someone that they can't save a deck chair they seem to have no problem approaching people who are videotaping when they aren't supposed to be.

How true. One must remember that deck chairs are not copy right protected, but production shows are. Severe fines can be levied for copy right infringement.

Hi Michelle, I've always thought it odd that you are not allowed to video the shows, and understand that claim that it is for copyright purposes, but then there will always be a few minutes of the show on and DVD that the ship sells of your cruise.

The other thing is that most lines promote their DVD by playing it non-stop on one of the in cabin TV channels, so what is to stop anyone setting up a camcorder, zooming in & recording it from there? OK so the affect is not as good as a live recording, but for a memory of the shows it is perfectly sufficient.
Not of course that I would condone such behaviour

Alan.

Alan, yes the same thought occured to me about the cruise dvds but of course they "own" the rights so they can play it on the tvs and they sell the cds so they aren't "giving it away."

I plan on getting the cruise dvd anyway so I'll assume there's a bit of each show on that.

As a writer, I fully agree with copyright issues, of course. I just didn't know, in the case of a performance not including cruisers, if there is a difference in copying the entire show or just snippets.

You would think they would allow snippets just as it helps to market their cruiseline when you show it to your family and friends. Just as I give away a few free samples of my poems to promote my books.

There are plenty of videos of cruise ship shows on U tube.

Its done frequently. Just as saving seats in the showroom and on deck still occurs despite the warnings.

Look at the many requests to make copies of the photos the ships phtographers take. It is said the copy shops won't duplicate them due to the copyrights. Some have said there are waivers for them.

While staying at the St. Regis in Dana Point, we attended a special show by Kenny Loggins. Everyone was advised to NOT take photos or videos.

We were the only ones who didn't bring a camera!! Moment missed because we followed the rules. We were at table #1 front stage, too!

Hi again Michelle,

I'm just not convinced it is really due to copyright laws, do the cruise lines pay the royalties on every DVD sold? Maybe I am just cynical, but if they prevent anyone videoing snippets, then there are likely to be more dvd sales, and during the on-deck shows, they positively encourage the recording. Something just doesn't ring right for me.

What seems daft with this level of copyright enforcement (and this comment is aimed against the owners, not the cruise lines) is that if someone likes a piece of music that they see in the show, they are more likely to remember to go & buy it if they have a reminder in the way of a video snip. I cannot believe that anybody would record the music from a show on a domestic camcorder in order to get around copyright.

I would rather the cruise lines just said that "videoing wasn't allowed as it would be a disturbance to those sat around you, due to the camcorder side screens, lights & sounds". That line would sound so much more caring for our fellow passengers as well.

Oh for an ideal world

Alan

right.... perhaps it's more just to generate dvd sales
if we all took our own videos, we wouldn't buy their cruise dvd.

I'm sure it's more about more money for the cruiselines than it is concern about copyright laws.
