That was not my experience. Like any Carnival ship if you are in the Piano Bar or Casino you might encounter smoke but I did not find it better or worse than the other ships. Some say the decor on the Freedom is a little over the top but that is in the eye of the beholder. I don't think you have anything to worry about. I would not hesitate to cruise on Freedom again.
I sailed the Freedom in its first season and we didn't hesitate to book again for this July! We expect the decor to be over the top, its part of the whole experience. We thought the ship was well laid out, plenty to do, and didn't notice it to be smokey.
If anyone else has been on recently I'd love to hear your feedback!

We had a great time on the Freedom in 2008. It had only been doing the Caribbean run for a short time and seemed like the crew was just a little unaccustomed to not being in Europe, or they had replaced most of the crew and it wasn’t accustomed to the Freedom.
Either way we still had great service and other that the food service schedules there was nothing to complain about.
I thought the decor on the Freedom is a little understated for Carnival.
