Default will Carnival end the single supplement?

I just read this on the Chicago Tribune website - I hope it means that Carnival will soon offer single-rate cabins!

"Months away from its debut, the Norwegian Epic cruise ship already is making a splash with plans for an Ice Bar at sea, a water park and performances by the hip Blue Man Group. But here may be its biggest innovation: single cabins without single supplements. Breaking with industry tradition, Norwegian Cruise line is installing 128 "Studio" staterooms, each holding one guest, on Decks 11 and 12 of the ship, which launches in July. Occupants will pay the same fares as other cruisers do per person, double occupancy, which start at $799 for a seven-day Caribbean itinerary.

Currently, solo cabin occupants on NCL ships pay twice the going fare, spokeswoman Courtney Recht said. A few very few ships offer single cabins. (The recently retired QE2 had some coveted ones.) But in general, solo staterooms are as scarce as occupied deck chairs on a stormy trans-Atlantic crossing. The Epic's studio staterooms are tiny about 100 square feet, compared with a standard inside stateroom of 128 square feet, Recht said. Maybe not for the claustrophobic. In any event, their denizens can escape to their own Studio Lounge, above, in the complex, accessed by private key card, to socialize and grab coffee and drinks. epic.ncl.com"

Michelle, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you ! If other cruiseline's do this it would probably have to be on new-builds.

I think it's a wonderful idea and hope that other's will eventually follow.

Not likely.

Sounds like NCL is putting in smaller cabins for singles. Carnival hasnt announced any such plans, as they can probably make more from double occupancy and catering to families.

NCL's idea does sound intriguing. From what I understand these studio are clustered around a common area which are shared with other single/solos.
Just my luck I would share this common area with all night party animals.
Many of my shore tours depart at 0730 or so. :-x
Still it is worth a look-see in the future after the "new" wears off this ship.

This would be something "need to know" before booking! If there are all night party animals, I'd hope that the cabin's themselves are sound proofed! Not every solo cruiser want's to party all night.

The idea of a solo traveler's lounge is unique and interesting, but I'm mostly thinking about just tiny cabins at just the single rate, not a double rate, for solo cruisers.

Hey Carnival, the population of singles is aging and living longer; we can cruise more often if you only charge us per person, so that means more money for drinks, photos, casino, etc... (Hint Hint)
Use those inner/inner rooms for this purpose! Repeat business will give you more money and make cruisers happier!

Epic will have a cluster of single cabins with it's own little lobby called the Living Room for the singles to mingle. The cabins are smaller than the standard cabin. These "studio" cabins are interior interiors like Michelle indicated above. You can find them on Deck 11Norwegian Epic ? The Next Level of Freestyle Cruising from Norwegian Cruise Line - Deck Plans

I find it a very interesting concept. I was going to book the studio for the CM Epic group, but the quoted price was based on a double. Doesn't really make since to have a double price quoted for that category since that makes it higher than a standard cabin. It would be very crowded with two in there. Maybe there are still bugs to be worked out in the booking process.

Michelle, Thank you for your BOLD comments. I am a single cruiser & although I do pay the suppliment, with my teeth clentched, I really resent it. And It does cout down on what I can do & buy on board. I am a dedicated Carnival Cruiser, but will be looking into travelling with NCL in the future.

Just to summarize, I'm getting a NO on that. The NCL single cabins are about the size of a closet on Carnival.

Actually the NCL studios are 100 sqft The Epic has 120 of these cabins which guests occupying the studios will get to a private club to mingle as well
