Giant waves hit cruise ship; 2 passengers killed - off of France...
How horrible!!!
Don't the ships have ways of knowing (radar, sonar, visual, reports by the weather bureaus, etc.) about high waves like that so they can plan an alternate route or plan a later departure from port?
I just read this story, too. I don't understand it, either . I've heard of "rouge" waves. Maybe this was one? I'm sure if there was any advance notice the Captain would have moved the ship and/or the passengers.
It's a very unusual thing to happen...

This is a good reason why I will stay with cruises that only cruise in calm waters! A 90-foot rogue wave once turned a huge oil rig upside down and killed many, so "The Poseidan Adventure" CAN really happen out in rough oceans.
Almost as terrifying as the questionable video of the wave itself is the spiraling decline of newscasters'/talking heads' ethical and professional behaviors. Example: "Seriously, you need to come to your television RIGHT NOW!". And "Wow, that was one AMAZING video!".
I think I hear my Journalism 101 professor spinning in his grave.

Michelle, the video I posted this morning, was touted as being from utube, & is the video I watched this morning, pixilations and all....the one you showed looks like the same one cleaned up, you can see it much better...
Interestingly, now, on utube its' unavailable and 2 others are marked CBS, one being marked copyright..The race to have, and, own what was shot must be in high demand.
It's so sad, one minute it's a wonderful time, the next minute, deaths and injury

The videographer was fortunate that he/she and the camera were still on the ship after that one hit.
I think I'll hang out high on the ship if we run into rough weather. The captain was skipping Barcelona due to bad weather.

I would also say this is a good lesson we can all learn from - if you ever DO cruise across the Atlantic or anywhere there are rough seas, to just make sure not to sit near the windows!
