Default Miracle troubles

A co-worker friend of mine recently sailed on the 8 day Miracle sailinmg from FLL and had a few bad experiences with the lobby bar and an incident of her friends belongings gone through.

Has anone experienced or heard about troubles recently on this ship?

Phil&Liz, you've been here long enough to know you're possibly going to need a "flameproof suit" unless you tell us exactly what the problems were !

What happened in the Lobby Bar? Who's supposed to have gone through her friend's things? How do they know this happened?

I hope they reported both incidents to the appropriate personnel.

I agree with Fern--- details--details -we need details--
A " co-worker " sailed -- was this his / her first cruise ? What is a " few " bad experiences at the Lobby bar where's there's normally a lot of people? A spilled drink, a mugging, or what?
How does the co-workers friend know her belongings were gone through--was something stolen, scattered about the cabin, etc?
Not being mean-- --but to make a blanket statement doesn't amount to much--need to get specific and pin down you're co-worker for exactly what happened, what they in turn did--example--did they report the incidents, and if so, what was said or done by the ships personel?
Thanks. Inquiring minds need to know the details!!

I believe Carnival does now have a policy requesting passengers leave their suitcases open, so they can be inspected. If that's what the co-worker is talking about, it likely did happen. And btw.. they will confiscate liquor, irons and other contraband.

Kuki,

I would like to hear more about this policy. When did it come into effect?

We cruised in the fall of 2006 and 2008 and had no issues with Carnival. During that time I was hearing stories about people in airports that were having items stolen from their suitcases by airport staff!

At that time I believe I came up with a pretty good personal security idea that I used when travelling to Florida, and cruising with Carnival to protect myself.

While I did not lock my suitcases, I have no problem with the proper people checking something questionable if it passes through an x-ray machine for example. What I started doing when tracelling was use small colored cable ties to lock the zippers together on my suitcases. This way, whenever I part with my luggage, when I pick it up later, if the cable ties are still on my zippers, no problem, if they are missing, stop the train, I'm going through my luggage before i go anywhere and making sure nothing is stolen. If something is missing, I know when it happened, and who to complain to. Customs agents / security will often leave a notice in your suitcase if they open it, I have experienced this once.

Tell us about the policy Kuki?

Also interested in hearing from the OP as it involves Miracle specifically, and I'm booked on her in November.

Krunch...

The policy is relatively new. I'd have to look to see exactly when I read it.

As for airports... they'll ALWAYS leave a note if they open your bags to check the contents.

Thanx Kuki!

While I was waiting for your response, I just found it...

Frequently Asked Questions

A little snipet from the policy...

"We suggest all luggage be unlocked before turning over to the porters in order to avoid any inconvenience or delay in delivering the luggage to your stateroom. Should you choose not to unlock your bags and prohibited items are found during screening, your luggage will be retained until you can open it in front of security personnel."

In some of my searching this board and other boards, someone made a couple of interesting comments.

1.) Apparently since this policy has been created it has already been modified. Apparently the new word of "SUGGEST" originally wasn't there and it was worded in such a way that said, "All luggage must be unlocked".

2.) Another poster mentioned how leaving your luggage unlocked might be a bad idea as your luggage sits in the hallway for who knows how long before you discover it? I worry little to NONE about Carnival staff and my luggage, however I worry about the passengers and children walking up and down hallways with easy access to my luggage.

A wise man once said, "A lock is not designed to keep a criminal out, a lock is to keep an honest person from making a mistake."

I will continue to read posts and Carnival policy until my cruise, but I think I will take my chances with my tie-wraps. If the staff needs to cut them, go ahead. If you have to hold my bags until I come to open them, sorry about the delay, but there ammount of honest people in this world seems to be deminishing every day.

I also wish the OP would come back and clarify their original post to be fair to the ship and it's staff. There is no credibility in their post as it is right now.

I was curious....are they inspecting baggage on boarding or when leaving the ship, or both?

We sailed "Triumph" on Jan 30th, and that was supposedly the first sailing where leaving the luggage unlocked was mandatory. Since that time, as Kuki stated, the language has been modified to say, "Suggested" instead of mandatory. It never bothered me one way or the other, as we never locked our luggage anyway,,just used tie wraps so we could tell if the bags had been inspected or not.
I'm not particularly worried about "Miracle" even though we're sailing her in just a few days, as we've sailed her a number of times before and always had GREAT cruises aboard this ship. "Ship Happens" aboard any ship, and there's not a lot you can do about it, except go aboard with a positive attitude, and a smile on your face. Its going to be a WONDERFUL cruise aboard "Miracle".

SKY: We will be on Carnival Miracle on the 28th of Mar. Please do not do anything to cause her to: collide, crash, sink. If you can't avoid that please take as many Pina Coladas as you can carry :-). Just kidding I know you will have a great cruise.

No problem Chief. I plan on consuming a few pina coladas during the week prior to your week in paradise, but I'll do my very best to leave everything in place, and in ship shape for you. If there happens to be a Carnival Dancer of the female persuasion missing when you board,,,,I didn't have anything to do with it!
Have a GREAT cruise, and maybe I'll see you boarding, as we disembark.

To fix that probelm, you NEVER put anything in suitcases of value if your expecting to check your bags. Only clothes and shave kits, etc. Easyer to replace clothes then something expensive.

Dosent matter what the ship is, it could be a Scow from Calcutta or the Queen mary from the North Atlantic. There are always a "thief" onboard. Just keep items in sight in public areas. (dont hang purse on back of chair, etc). While in a lounge or bar.

Ok folks, simma down now!

Yes, I would agree with Kuki that likely the second issue was due to this new policy. The cruiser that experienced this was not new to CCL and was taken aback by it. Nothing missing, thank goodness, but obviously gone through.

Chalk it up to not being informed about the new policy. Move on.

The first issue was kinda adressed by John on his blog when he asked "Who drinks at 8am!?" It does seem that there are some who do enjoy a Bloody Mary in the morning.

I can see where the first issue isn't one to be so alarmed about but it was an issue to her and the compalaint was not handled very well by the bartender or Guest Services..

It seems the Capers lists the Lobby Bar (Metropolis) to be open at 730am.
On many of the 8 days the bartender (name withheld for now) not only would not serve anyone, but would not open until 8-830am and even then w/o all services available. For instance, say you want a Bloody Mary with celery stick. Well, the bartender would curtly say "we are not open yet" and then after 815 or so he would say "I don't have any of that stuff out yet".

The pax asked that perhaps the Capers was incorrect and should be changed to the correct hour. Or, is the bartender being lax in their duties.
GS could offer no answers but took the pax cabin number and said they would get back to them. They never did.

Being an expeienced cruiser (albeit on CCL only thus far), I would not find either of these issues al that crucial. It was the first cruise with CCL for the pax and so there could be something there.

Thanks Kuki for pointing out a likely explanation for the luggage thing. I had seen that but forgotten about it.

Hi Phil&Liz, thanks for the more in depth explanation! I now understand both of these problems, no "suit" required .

I have no intention of leaving my luggage unlocked before giving it to the porter (who is NOT a cruise ship employee). I'll leave my TSA locks on and if Carnival wants to look at my underwear I'll be happy to unlock my luggage for them!

Although I'm not usually awake at 7:30 AM , I do like to start my day (usually about 11 AM) with a Bloody Mary. I can understand why someone would be unhappy if anything was scheduled to open and either didn't, or opened without the proper "equipment".

I am very surprised that they didn't get any action from the Purser's office about the bar thing. I hope they noted the problem on their comment cards.

Thanks for the info,

I've been told they did indeed leave a less than flattering comment card !

Default open suitcases

If i leave my suitcase unlocked they may see my tideywhites, and i may have to wear my SPEEDO.I understand this is a security issue so is if someone brings contraband on board. i also understand that the porters are not CCL employees and really dont give a ___ about you luggage as we learned in NY 2yrs ago>When we were told "tip me now or you may never see your luggage and they were back up by the superviosr who said i dont know anything WOULD LIKE TO HEAR MORE ON THIS .

What? No Bloody Mary in the mourning! Time to mutiny, take over the ship, then make the bartender and his supervisor walk the plank. It's a bar, there is no excuse for not having the ingredients to make a simple drink such as a Bloody Mary. In fact, I believe it was the DOD in the am on my last cruise.

We sailed her September 2008 and September 2009. My opinion is she doesn't show her age. Staff in 2009 just as great as the staff in 2008. Atrium lobby bartenders and waiters/waitresses go out of their way to take care of you.

We do not lock our luggage, have never had anyone go through it. Our cabin stewards both trips were excellent. Everyone so very helpful.

My only complaint with the Miracle is that the maintenance staff closes the partitions between our balcony cabins early in the day of our last sea day. I want to suck up every second of the trip with our friends and the last day we have to talk through the partition.

The Miracle is an easy ship to maneuver around as are her sister ships the Pride and Legend. Once you get the hang of where the elevators are, you've got the ship down pat. Rear of the ship (or I should say AFT) is food Lido deck and decks 2 and 3 for MDR, Casino and theater forward on Deck 2. Atrium lobby has bar, some entertainment, happy hour specials, pursers deck and excursion desk (they also do bean bag competitions there). MDR has gaudy colors but who cares, I'm looking at the great food and enjoy the company of DH, family and friends.

Cabin always spotless and as I said I didn't think she showed being over 6 years old.

Enjoy your cruise!

made me think a few cruises ago on the Legend - hubby always likes to hit a bar around 9 a.m. for bloody mary fix. He was sitting in atrium lobby with the drink when he said he thought he was going into a "low" (he's diabetic). I run over to the bartender and ask her for a small glass of orange juice while quickly explaining what's going on . She says "I can't give it to you unless you give me your sail and sign card"

Needless to say last time we were at that bar while she was working but I now also make sure I've got lifesavers on me at all times in case that ever happens again!!!

I too am looking forward to this new itinerary! We were about to book a different cruise which had a repeat of one port that we had done before. We are trying to see as many different ports as we can when we cruise, and this is cruise number three for us to the carribean, and so far no repeats! I suspect our look will eventually run out, if it hasn't already after this cruise I'm not 100% sure, but I THINK we are only the second sailing to these new ports, so that's cool too.

Can't wait!

3 of the 4 are new to us. We have been to Aruba before but not Curacao, Dominican Republic or Grand Turk.

It is good to see Carnival getting new and interesting ports to visit in the Caribbean.

I hope that this is the beginning of better things to come with Carnival :-)

Needless to say last time we were at that bar while she was working but I now also make sure I've got lifesavers on me at all times in case that ever happens again!!!
You know you can get orange juice and other drinks for "free" at the self serv counter on Lido right? OJ, Mango, Iced tea, Hot chocolate, coffie, etc....

That is true but I do see her point in that it could have gone much worse by moving him to Lido or leaving him alone there to go to lido 9 decks up from the atrium bar.

Reminds me of the joke..."Suicide hotline, please hold." No time to mess around.

Bump for skymaster!

We were originally discussing luggage locks and policies. Just found this old thread and noticed skymaster that you were on Miracle this past spring, and IIRC, you are getting ready to sail her again! Us too

So, in spring, how was the luggage situation? Did you cable tie your suitcase zippers? Did they ask you to remove them prior to checking your luggage? Were they delivered to your room undisturbed with cable ties still intact?

Update please...from anyone actually, specefically recent Miracle cruisers though.

Thanx,

Krunch
