Default Grand Turk and Freeport

Grand Turk and Freeport Bahamas are 2 stops for our June cruise on the Pride. As my husband is more interested in just getting off the ship and walking around when possible, can anyone tell me if there is any shops/sites to see at these ports that can be walked to once off the ship?

Thanks from a cruising novice!

Grand Turk has mostly Cruise-line built stores - they are good for maybe an hour of shopping tops.

Freeport is a more developed island and there should be a lot more shopping there, but I have not been there so I am not sure how close it is to the dock.

In Freeport, It is a $5pp shared ride to Our Lucaya with shopping, beach, restaurants, casino, etc. For a little more you can get a day pass (chair, pools, etc) at one of the resorts.

There is some shopping, food, and at least one bar at the port itself.

Here are some pictures from Feb, 2010

Great pictures! I hope this isn't a dumb question, but I am assuming the prices mentioned and shown in your pictures are US dollars. Are US dollars accepted on both Grand Turks and Freeport?

Would agree with zydecocruiser. When you get off the ship in Freeport, there's not much right at the port. A couple tourist shops and one bar. But if you want to go somewhere to walk around, it's a $5pp cab ride. More like a bus. You won't get a private cab for $5pp. And it's a 30 minute ride each way to the other side of the island - Port Lucaya. They'll wait till the van is full and take 13 people together. It's a fairly tight ride. I'm a really small person so it didn't bother me. Once you get there, there's a beach, fairly nice and some shops and bars. Basically everything is in US dollars. But each time someone in our group went up to get beers, the total amount changed. They treat 1 bahamian dollar like 1 american dollar. Apparently the exchange is not exact but they use them interchangably. And like I said, the amounts might seem mysterious. But nothing was expensive so nobody complained. I heard they were hit with a hurricane about 5 years ago and have never quite recovered. It's an ugly ride to Port Lucaya. 1/2 the island is oil refinery or something like that. It smelled really bad. Once you get to Port Lucaya it's much nicer but not a whole lot to do. We only had a few hours in port so we didn't bother booking an excursion. If we had more time I would consider a snorkling trip or something. The island itself isn't worth seeing. Or it might have been a good day to stay on the ship.

One hint, and I don't think things have changed since I was in the Bahamas is, if you eat in a restaurant, the tip is included. When we dined, the service was painfully slow, and the staff a bit surly. I think because of this inclusion, and, island time, it's a....is it what it is attitude

I've always paid in US money in Nassau and Freeport - sometimes I get Bahamian in change, sometimes US, sometimes a mix.l. The bills make for colorful souvenirs.

I was in Grand Turk in January and there is a fair number of shops that you can check out. There are the usual shops, but then there are some smaller mom/pop operated shops that sell local items as well. They have Del Sol, Ron Jon Surf Shop, Little Switzerland, a massive Margaritaville, Diamonds International (suprise suprise), Goodmark Jewellers, and some food/drink as well.

Enjoy!

I was in Grand Turk in January and what shopping there is a cruise built shopping center, But what we did was hire a tax to take us around, the island is very small only about 7 miles but 5 miles. It was a nice tour and I got to see the island which at that time had alot of problems but their are some really nice spots, I suggest not to have many expectations about in Grand Turk. The shopping in free port is what you would expect from a major port of call. But just be aware that sometimes I found better deals shopping on the cruise ship than I found in the Bahamas. i.e. I Bought my dad a Citizen Watch on the ship it was retailing for $120 which was on sale but the same watch in the Bahamas was $240

Yes we would like to know also. We are going to "Grand Turk" in November on the Carnival Glory. We understand that there is a "Margaritaville" there and a few other shops, not much else. Someone told us that the beaches are really great. We've been looking at "Carnival's Shore Excursion" web page but haven't found one that we'd like. Our Travel Agent told us that it might be too early to search for more excursions. Thanks...Diane & Dave
