Bad Neighbors?

On one cruise, we had to get up very early for a long days excursion in Caracas. Once back, we decided to take a nap, before our late seating dinner...We were awoken by our neighbor trying to sing opera No big deal, we had snoozed, and it was time to get up to dress for dinner...

At our table, which was a rectangle table for 10..[hated it] I began to tell the story of, how the man next door to us, was trying to sing....turns out he was our table mate! We all had a good giggle, and he was a good sport!

I have head some stories of bad neighbors over the years....have you ever had issues?

Just once. We had some next door neighbors once who must have been very religious. The woman kept yelling,,,"Oh God",,,,"Oh God".

I don't think we have ever had neighbors that were really bad, but maybe a little naughty!!

I've never had real "problem neighbors" but on one cruise the people next door kept their balcony door open. There was no problem with that but I think they were "The Bickerson's" because they were constantly arguing or sniping at each other. On the second day they were going at it and I finally asked if they could please shut the door. Never heard a thing after that.

We had another couple who were the exact opposite. They kept their balcony door open but were always laughing and enjoying themselves. I liked that and never thought to ask them to shut their door because we could hear them. It's interesting how some sounds don't bother you and others do. The laughing couple were probably louder than The Bickerson's.

We did once and it was absolutely awful, up all hours of the night and morning, not even trying to consider others may be sleeping. It was a bunch of woman and all they did was party, play loud music and drink...I think many neighbors complained, but nothing was done. Thank God it was the only time, most people are considerate of others.

The couple in the cabin next door on out last cruise were very quiet in the room but on the excursions were arguing constantly . Aside from that they appeared to be very nice people

One cruise we had some bad balcony neighbors. They were always smoking, talking, yelling and peeking around our balcony. One time we were sunbathing on our balcony and they kept on looking over at us. They would go out onto their balcony and smoke cigarettes one after another, creating a huge cloud of smoke that would blow right into our balcony, and make a lot of noise. We knew just when they were on their balcony, because we could hear their door slam and then there would be a huge cloud of smoke that would blow into our balcony followed by loud talking & yelling. Then they would start peeking into our balcony, followed by laughing & joking. We then were forced to go back into our cabin. The next morning I would have to pick up their cigarttte butts off my deck. I did see them once and asked them not to throw cigaretts over the side and to keep the noise down in the late hours but ??? I complained, but we don't believe that they were spoken to by the Hotel Management because they did it all through that cruise. They were just rude people.

We have been fairly lucky...(knock on wood)....

a couple of times we have gotten the neighbors that have Mom and Dad in one cabin and the kids in the cabin across the hall and they acted like the hallway was just an extra room....slamming doors between both cabins constantly.

What can you say...you can't fix stupid.....

We had a coincidence ....we had cancelled a suite for one reason or another & we were telling the story at dinner, one of our companions was in that very suite!!

We are fortunate never to have had bad neighbors. Unfortunately, the people in the cabin next to us are not always so lucky.

We had a young couple across the hall who fought constantly. Well, at least he ranted and raved. Never heard her open her mouth. We strongly suspected that he was beating her from the things he would say. We reported it because we were in fear for her. It never changed the situation though. We saw them in the breakfast line one morning and he was trying to hug her and she would'nt even look at him. Can't say I blame the poor girl.

This may be the one and only cruise for some. So it could be the last cruise?

I don't know the answer to the "party-ing" that goes on while cruising.

All I know is that some people only get one chance to cruise and they will make the best(or worse in neighbors case) out of this cruise..

I am sorry in advance if I am not being very helpful or agreeable...

I can agree that the neighbors who think they need total silence at all times, the sound of a shutting door is intolerable or if someone "actually" speaks in the hall is an invasion of their privacy. These people can be as bad or worse than someone who makes too much noise.

You are on a cruise and having some fun and there will be some noise. If each party has some respect and tolerance then cruising will be much more enjoyable.

There is a lot of wiggle room between total silence and total chaos.

We took a cruise during Spring Break and had a lot of kids letting doors slam and yelling (yes not just having a conversation) up and down the hallway. It doesn't take that much time or effort to shut your door instead of letting it slam. Sometimes it seems our cabin doors do not lock unless you make sure you pull it shut.

I guess my pet peeve is the slamming of hotel, condo, or cabin doors. Especially late at night/early in the mourning when I'm trying to sleep. Apparently the learning curve for some people is extremely long as they constantly do it the whole week. How the cabin doors withstand this abuse week after week is amazing.

I was on Liberty last December and we had some neighbors from hell. They were always coming back to there room drunk and loud, all hours of the day. One afternoon they were in the hallway being very loud for about 15 minutes, so I got out my video camera, opened my door and started filming them. They started giggling and thought it was funny, until I told them to watch for themselves on youtube. Then they ran into their cabin, and we never heard from them the remainder of the trip.

It sometimes can be the people you might least suspect, we were told that the sailing before ours, had a contingency of policemen, that were rowdy and drunk enough to do some major damage on board...how would you like your room to be near theirs?

I agree with Mike--cops on a cruise being rowdy???? No Way--like they don't text and drive and don't talk on their cells and drive and don't exceed the speed limits --- no sireee. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Seriously I don't expect a ship to be like a morgue as it is a floating resort but some folks just don't have any respect for others--slamming doors, loud talking in the halls late at night, etc. I think the ones who let their doors slam probably do the same at home, if they have a door---maybe they don't have one and haven't caught on to how it works !!
One trick I pulled not too long ago on three ladies who were in an inside across the hall from us--they would come in every night 1-2 a.m loudly talking, drunk, taking forever getting the door open--guess they were too drunk to hit the slot with the card and then be up for an hour carrying on.
Then of course they wanted to sleep all day. After about the 2-3rd night, I started getting even--l always get up early --I'd go to a house phone and dial their number and wake them up--ask for Fred, Where's Bill, are you guys ready yet, etc etc. Felt good to get a little revenge !! :evil: I finally had to ask them if they could please not be quite so loud when they came in as it disturbed all the others around them. They did quieten down somewhat.
I cured one couple once from door slamming late at night--every night they would come in around 1-2 a.m., loudly slam the cabin door, slam the balcony door, talk loud, etc. Finally one night when they started I got up, went to our cabin door, opened it as far as it would go, slammed it as hard as I could, ran to the balcony door, did the same, hollered, yelled,etc slammed drawers, back to the front door, back to the balcony door, etc. made about a half dozens passes doing this-- never heard them slam a door from that point on. Sometimes you just have to get people's attention. ;-)
I'd be willing to bet if you got into one of these door slammers cars and slammed the car door as hard as some of them slam the cabin door, you'd probably have to fight with them !!
But to give respect where it's due, I was on the Mariner a couple weeks (4-11-4-18 ) ago and never , that I can remember, heard a cabin door slam.Maybe the folks around us were experienced cruisers or maybe wealthy enough that they had doors at home and knew how to operate one !!

Ron..surprised someone didn't report your door slamming...maybe i've just been lucky or just plain tired or a sound sleeper, but never was disturbed by my neighbors

We only had one bad experience. The cabin next door to us had two fold down twins and three children were left in the cabin alone while Mom and her friend were in the casino. The kids, being kids, thought jumping off the top bunk was great fun but it makes a LOT of noise. Not to mention the laughing, whooping,, etc that went with it. At first I went next door to politely ask them to stop, when I realized no adult was there and it continued for another half hour I called security. I could hear a women come in shortly after that and yell at the kids for spoiling her fun, etc.

then - you got it, she left and it all started again. I called security who said this time they would certainly take care of it, but also asked it we would like to move to another cabin. We took them up on it, especially since it was a much nicer cabin.

Felt sorry for the kids - thank the good Lord it was not a balcony where the children had been left to their own devices.
