Cruise Staff & Cruise Directors

I hear and read lots of stories about Cruise Directors. Some good, some not so good. The same goes for Cruise Staff. The DW & I have very seldom discussed or even noticed who the CD is, ( or was ) on a particular ship. Outwardly, the CD doesn't play a starring role in our vacation. I cannot name one from a previous cruise. This may sound bad for CD's but if our vacation is good is is probably because a CD and the staff are doing their job so smoothly in the background we don't notice them.
Am I the only one who doesn't notice ( or care ) who the CD is ?
Does a CD make that big an impact on your cruise ?? Your Thoughts ??

No you are not.

Most of the time it really doesn't matter who the CD is. I am not looking for the Cruise Director to make my cruise fun.

Having said that: There are Cruise Directors who definitely do a great job and do make the cruise a lot more enjoyable for many passengers.

Take care,
Mike

I'm probably the exception to the rule, as the C.D. does indeed make a difference to me. I almost always "do" the "Showcase Of Stars" passenger talent show, and/or the "Legends Show". Therefor I work with, and interact with the Cruise Director, and a bunch of the entertainment staff. If he/she is a "Dud", then it really makes a difference in the enjoyment of doing these activities, but if he/she is actively involved, and upbeat, it makes these shows a GREAT deal of fun, not only for those of us who participate, but also for those of you in the audience.

I DO notice the Cruise Director, and whether or not he is personable or annoying. Most of them are OK, some stand out, and I still remember two particular Assistant Cruise Directors who were extremely annoying and obnoxious.
That goes for the CD's staff as well. Some of them have made my ship experience so much better for their efforts in Trivia and games, while others have been duds.
So yes, the Cruise Staff does make a difference to me!

I never paid much attention ..until..Nov 2005 on the Conquest which due to Katrina had been switched from New Orleans to Galveston, and our smooth jazz cruise, which was suppose to be on the Elation and full charter, had to be switched to the Conquest which made it no longer a full charter and no advance notice to the non smooth jazz passengers that this was going to occur which caused meal time and facility availabilty adjusted...needless to say it had the potential to be a very unhappy cruise for all parties, plus we hit rough weather which meant we could not tender in Cozumel and alot of folks get very seasick

but

the CD and his staff did an outstanding job of making the best of the situation and did everything possible to make the situation work...the evening performances of the smooth jazz artist were not open to the non smooth jazz paying guest, but the CD worked with the promoter to have several performances on the lido deck during the day that everyone could enjoy..the jazz group was assigned the early seating which moved every one else to the later seating and there was only one show (due to venue) at 1130 pm for the regular guest (the irony of course, the smooth jazz guest could enjoy the best of both worlds)

so IMHO, the CD does make a difference when there is a last minute change in plans or routine

We have watched several of the current CDs "grow up" through the ranks.

Since we have sailed with folks like Tex multiple times, we have had the pleasure of getting to know them.

Most of what the CD and ACD do are behind the scenes....so folks don't know they have a good one until they run across one that isn't as organized or on the ball.

Never paid much attention to the CD and staff. As one of you said, they work mostly behind the scenes and are really transparent to a cruise. However, there have been a copuple of occasions that the CD was more bothersome then helpful like: announcements every 30 minutes or so all day long while at sea. That fast became irritating. But in general CD's are not what I am looking for on a cruise. More the travel and fun times.

Joemo, you echoed my thoughts perfectly...some are betters then others but they normally don't impact my cruise one eay or the other.

Aerogirl May 25th, 2010 09:32 PM

I don't think I ever gave the CD a first thought much less a second thought on any of my three cruises. Like Mike said the CD does not make or break a cruise for us.

I don't really notice who the CD is on my cruises. I'm not a shopper or do kareoke so I don't really run into them. This last cruise I was dragged to the Legends show (Sorry Ken) so I saw the CD there. If they are in charge of hiring the comedians that come on board then BRAVO and thank you.

I can't remember any of our CD's. I do appreciate the work they do, but none of them stand out at all  .

One of the best ever CD was the one aboard the Carnival Spirit. We cruised aboard the Spirit back in October 2006. The cruise director was "Shawn Bussey". She was Carnival's only female Cruise Director, (at that time). She was wonderful. She helped make that cruise more exciting for everyone. We would like to cruise with her again sometime. The spirit's Captain, Giorgio Pagano is the same Captain of the Carnival Splendor, (now days), (they must move from ship to ship). Our next cruise, in November 7th 2010 will be abord the Carnival Glory. I wonder who is the CD? We saw a show on the travel channel the other day, (it must have been old), showing all about cruising. It featured the Carnival Glory, (mostly, along with other cruise lines and ships), and showed their CD, (can't remember his name). That show was a great show for people that have never been on a cruise and or people that love cruising.LOL
