Default Carnival ends Air Deviation and Hotel Booking options

I didn't see this posted previously, but Carnival has eliminated their air deviation and pre- and post-cruise hotel programs. The set Fly Aweigh option will continue and they will honor all currently booked hotels and flight changes. This was effective May 24.

Too much overhead - not enough profit?

Right. The cruise line said there was not enough business to justify continuing the programs since most people do their own air and hotel arrangements.

I booked a Med cruise on the Carnival Magic for October of 2011, and wanted to get a quote on air from the cruise line. It said it wasn't available from the airport I was flying from, but I thought it was because I was booking so far out (Feb., 2010). I wonder if the Fly Away option will be available closer to the crusise? Maybe 9-12 months out?

I can see them dropping it....justifying the cost of this dept, when most people now, book their own now, makes fiscal sense.

Just a sign of the times.
Even my Avon Rep. just emailed me saying she no longer will have ordering online because of "internet costs". Guess I'll have to go back to the old way....pick up the phone.

We booked the same cruise for Sep. of 2011, and got a quote for air. It was not at our closest airport, but one within 3 hrs drive. I can get our air booked from our close airport for about $800 less than Carnival quoted.
I think we are going to see a lot of this, and other industries change with the economic times. The "Old Days" of many things are a thing of the past.
Just mho.

Gary,

I may have to do some creative air travel. I live in Nashville, and it may be cheaper for me to fly Southwest to an East Coast city, pick up my luggage, and check it again with a carrier flying to Barcelona.

One can spend hours on the internet trying to figure this all out!

For hotels you could call the hotel carnival was useing and get a better price. You could not use the air package if you wanted to go 2 or 3 days before the cruise. We stoped useing carnival years ago for hotel and air. You think you would have got a better price booking the cruise, hotel and air thru carnival.
So its no surprise. Travel ins will be next. Same deal. You can only get the cruise thru carnival. We get ins and it covers us from the time we leave the house till we get back for just alittle more money..

An agent friend received the info from Carnival. I don't want to link to competing websites but if you google "Carnival ends air deviation" you'll get details.

Shelby;
I know what you mean. I will wait a little longer before I get too serious about booking my air. We are within 2 hours of OKC, and KC so those are two options. Wichita is close, but not much of a hub. I will just sit on it for awhile, and do some more research before I jump in.
Good luck on your bookings
Gary I.

Perhaps CCL is feeling the same pressures TAs have been feeling for years.

Gary,

I did some preliminary checking, and I could use my free Rapid Rewards coupon on SW to fly to Philly, then do a non-stop from Philly to Barcelona. Would save me $200+ as opposed to booking all the way thru on Delta, American, etc. from Nashville to Barcelona.

I'm sure this will all change between now and then, but for right now I think that's what I'll do. Nashville has good air service for a city our size, but still not the same as the big cities like Chicago, NYC, LA, or Boston.

I realized something was up when that section of my cruise documents had that information missing. One day it was on there and when I went to view them again, the programs weren't there anymore.

I never have used it anyway so it wont bother me, It was always more expensive to book flights with carnival anyways. It's probably a good idea they are doing away with it.

The agency I work for does not handle any air. It is a lot of work for no comission. There are many agencies who no longer book air.

The standard cruise air, with a few exceptions, is more expensive, and you often end up on crappy flights. With a deviation, you get to select from airlines, flight times and prices and was always competitive in my experience.
