Default Travel Insurance

What is the best travel insurance to buy? I have checked Carnival's prices and those at insuremytrip.com. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have a safe and fun Memorial Day week-end

That's a hard question to answer without knowing more about you and your situation.

Do you have any pre-existing medical conditions?

How secure is your job? If you lost it, would you be unable to go on the cruise?

Does your medical insurance cover you out of the country? Do you need medical evacuation coverage?

What would you do if someone in your family became gravely ill and you had to fly home to be with them or attend their funeral? Would you complete the cruise or interrupt it?

There are more questions, but that's all I can think of right now. I've had good luck with using Insure My Trip - I compare coverage and prices between 3-5 different companies and policies.

Default Factors and Information

The general rule that is always quoted regarding travel insurance is not to buy from the travel provider (e.g. cruise line). One reason is that if the cruise line defaults, you are out of luck. Also, you may not be getting the best insurance or the best price if the cruise line sends you to its "partner."

That being said, there are still a lot of choices. In addition to Insure My Trip, another comparison website is Squaremouth. On either of these sites you can get a general idea of what is available (at what price) from a number of companies.

As mentioned by Shelby, the "best" insurance company or specific policy depends on your particular needs, as well as your destination. (E.g. if you are covered by Medicare and traveling only in the U.S. you may not need medical coverage, but outside the U. S. you will.)

Do you need insurance to cover your flights or rental car in addition to the cruise cost? Do you need/want life insurance? Each company has slightly different offerings, so you will need to evaluate them.

A few insurance companies offer various add-on packages to cover specific situations. These include:
  • Coverage for other prepaid costs such as greens fees or lift tickets that would be forfeited if you had to cancel your trip
  • "Cancel for any reason" option that allows you to get a partial refund, even if your cancellation is not for an "approved" reason
  • "Adventure" package that pays for you to rent sports equipment (e.g. scuba gear or golf clubs) if your equipment is lost or delayed

If you need certain options, that could help you narrow down your choices.

There are also sites where users rate their experience with each company. These vary widely, and there are always some unhappy people (who didn't read the fine print), so take them with a grain of salt.

Also check the A.M. Best rating of the company. I would not purchase a policy from any company that is rated lower than "A".

Take care,
Mike

I am going on the trip with 3 teen-agers. Mostly concerned about them getting sick and needing to be flown home. I currently have health insurance. Also, for some reason we aren't about to go, i don't want to be out the money. We will not be flying as we are 1 hour from Galveston and I currently have health insurance on everyone.

Thanks for all the input

Please check carefully with your health insurance company! Most won't cover you outside the U.S.

I have purchased CSA a couple of times but (fortunately) I have never had to use it.

Last several years we used Travel Guard. You must figure out what rates are best for you. We are covered from the time we leave the house till we get back. Covers car,air tickets, hotel and cruise. Costs alittle more but we have no worries if something happens. Our concerns were if we ever had to be air lifted from a ship the cost would be $$$$. Ya just never know. Carnival will only cover the cruise. We had to contact TG 1 time for lost luggage in miami and they handled everything. Found it and had it delivered to the hotel at 1230 in the morn. We told them to deliver it ASAP when they found it. Every 2 hrs they called us and left us know what was happening. We were very happy with the service. They had told me to buy up to $500 of whatever I needed till they found the luggage. I never got a chance to buy anything I had my luggage back.

We always purchase "Travel Guard" insurance. We purchase it through our tavel agent. Last year I had booked & paid in full a supprise cruise for my wife's birthday. Well to make a long & terable story short, she had a very bad accident. I notified our travel agent that we had to cancel the cruise. She notified the insurance company and we received a complete refund from Carnival, along with a very nice simpthy card.. We also received a complete refund from nonrefundable airline tickets, (Southwest). The airline ticket refund was unexpected. I thought that we would only get airline ticket vouchers for future travel. Dave & Diane...
