Unfortunatly this is common business practice for the PVP's. Anytime you look online, or call in they establish what they call a "lead". That lead will be kept on file for them to send promos and have the PVPs able to call..send emails..write letters. That give them just a little over 32 million leads and counting.

Being a former employee at CCL, the PVPs cause more internal drama than they make business. Not all but most. So most do not care if you are booked with CCL direct or thru a TA, to them a name and number is another chance for a sale. Its a shame because there TA sales still beat out there PVPs.

To this day my fav was while im still working at CCL, I get a phone call the same as yours..."my name is so and so..and im your new PVP" I couldnt quit laughing when I told her she was calling me while I was in the CCL break room.

Thanks for letting me rant...felt good.

Phone solicitations are high on my list of annoyances. They even score higher than dealing with the TSA, which is really saying something.

I'd forgotten about the e-mails "my" PVP (never used one) sent me. And in fact I do recall at least one snail mail letter now that it was mentioned. All of this nonsense has stopped since I complained to my agent about it. Not sure if that did anything or if it was coincidental.

I love "messing" with my Carnival PVP. Every fews day I log on to Carnival's website and pretend to select cruises to see how fast they jump into action. I usually get a phone message the very next day . They always call during the day and email me later to say they missed me. Duh! They haven't figured out that I have no intention of booking a cruise directly with them.

"Technically" the PVP did not lie to you.

If you are an employee of an airline, the PVP can get you the Interline discount that the normal TA can not get you.

Our PVP got us this discount for years, before Carnival eliminated cargo carriers. (Although RCCL and Celebrity do still include cargo carriers ~like UPS)

I booked a cruise through a travel agent for the Norwegian Epic - I have not even sailed yet, and I have had TWO voice mails from my NCL personal vacation planner (or whatever they call them).

Man - I am glad I am not a travel agent, I would feel really bad being stabbed in the back like that.

I used my company's travel agent before I retired from my 2nd career after the Navy. Now I have a Carnival PVP and to be truthful she has always treated me very well (10 cruises so far). I am over 55, retired military, a past Carnival Cruiser and a Florida resident. Whenever I call her (she has never called me unless she is returning a call) she always seeks the best available discount that I qualify for and if she can will couple one or two discounts for even a better rate. So I guess I am lucky. I also understand that maybe it is a business decision to follow up on internet requests to their web site much as any legit business does. Anyway I do understand your annoyance at this practice much as my annoyance at telemarketer's calls. Just my 2 cents worth.

It is beyond the pale for a cruise line "seller" to contact someone who is already booked such as in Paul's case. I guess the goal there was to get Paul to cancel the booking with his agent and rebook with NCL's version of the PVP? That is unethical in a very significant way.

I went on the Carnival site last week to look up the answer to a question posted here. A day later a PVP called and said he'd "noticed" I'd been on the site and wondered if he could help me. I told him I had a wonderful TA and he just said that he hoped I'd cruise Carnival again. He never said that he could get me a better deal.

I don't think there's really anything so wrong in what they're doing (and apparently it works, or they wouldn't be doing it!). I imagine that people who are inexperienced cruisers without TA's might like to hear from a PVP.

Paul, you might have been in the same position. Had you been searching for a cruise on NCL before they called you?

I got three different prices from Carnival today for the same identical booking. I'm not sure what they are up to there. Obviously it created enough doubt that I didn't book anything. Looks like MSC then on that one.

This is another misconception. While not all agents can book interline rates there are numerous Interline agencies that can and do. It is not exclusive to Carnival or its PVP's.

Take care,
Mike

Cool

I've been on 10 Carnival cruises, with my 11th booked for January 2011. (One Disney). 9 out of 10 cruises I booked with a travel agent. For my 10th I ended booking directly with Carnival because I was pricing a couple different ships, itineraries, and rooms. I booked my 11th through Carnival too.

I have never been contacted by a PVP from Carnival. I go on Expedia all the time and different travel websites to check prices and I go to Carnival's website too.

Default Different experience

On my first cruise many moons ago I used a ta (al gore had not created the Internet yet) I had a question and called the line and the first thing the rep asked was are you working with a ta? When I said yes The rep was almost rude he wanted to hang up so quickly. I was told that they were not allowed to speak with me if I was working with a ta

Concerning getting best cruise info from a ta HA. Not in my experience. TAs are right there with used car salesmen as far as knowledge and professionalism. Disclaimer: yours are probably wonderful.

Who needs a ta when you have access to scores of cruise related websites and communitiies of cruisers.

You're right! Our TA is wonderful! No cruise line's rep will talk to you if you're booked through a TA. This is not anything new. If you use a TA they "own" your booking. A TA who is a Cruise Specialist can work wonder's for you! You can get discount's from their company, OBC's, and if you ever need help, they'll be there for you!

Yes, you can book on your own, but you get NO service. I guess it depend's on what you want... .

Default Embrace the now

TAs were a good idea in the old days but now they're like the card catalog at your local library.

If you are computer literate and reasonably intellegent you can inform yourself about your cruise ship and destination faster than you can drive your horse and buggy from Mayberry to your TAs office in Mt Pilot.

As far as discounts, I'll have to take your word for it that you're TA gets you the best deal--just like your car dealer gives you the best deal on that undercoating on your Buick.

CruiseSC....

In a way I have to agree with you about many travel agents. If there is one thing I have NO tolerance for it is a professional anyone who says they are experts in a given field and I find out they have no real experience at all. They are often called "paper-experts" because they may have passed a class, but they aren't well-informed.

If you meet a travel agent who wants to sell you a cruise and they don't even think to ask you basic quesrtions like "do you belong to any loyalty programs" or "what kind of stateroom do you want," then you need to find a cruise professional.

There are certain cruise agents who truly are assets. But they are rare.

In general, I want a BUSY cruise agent, because that tells me they do enough volume that they don't have any time to do anyting except take care of me. A cruise agent that has spare time is probably trying to figure out how to get a higher commission out of you.

A busy cruise agent will just do as you ask and get it done because they have a dozen other things to do. And they won't mind if you ask for a credit due to a best price guarantee because they are more interested in building out their stable of customers than they are in getting the most out of the few customers they have.

I was intrigued to see this post because I too have a PVP- named Joanna. I have no interest in Joanna, nor do I need her assistance.
We recently booked our cruise on the Triumph with our TA from AmEx-
then after I logged on to update stuff for that cruise, I got an e-mail from Joanna, saying that she noticed that I was looking at cruises & that I should call her.
Really, all I looked at was the cruise I already booked with someone else- feels too much like Big Brother to me.

I love when my Carnival PVP calls. Im alway after her for a free upgrade to a suite. They know everytime you go on their site, same with RCI and NCL. Once in a while I get a call or e-mail, nothing ever worth while till a month ago. Got a letter from CCL players club, jumped all over that. Till that was done I got a balcony for $144. and the other half paid $676. For 7 day out of Baltimore, (no Air) love it. They can bother me anytime they want. The prices from RCI for a balcony are way out there. I get a letter every month with their so called special. I can do 14 days with CCl for what RCI wants for 7. Some of the EPic prices are alittle better but not great. We would like to do the Epic and Oasis but they are way over priced for a balcony. So we just keep going with CCL.

We have always booked through a PVP (Shay Hart) & only had a great communication with her...
Answers all of my silly questions...
Very seldom calls (do get emails), BUT when I give her a call she gets right back to me...
We always book the Early Saver 9 to 10 months in advance...
Shay ask me on my 2nd cruise booking if I was in the military for at least 2 years, I said yes & I got the military discount that I wasn't aware of at the time...
If you could find a GOOD TA that will take care of you then go for it...
