First of all, I have to ask-is it going to ruin everything if the ship can't port at St. Thomas for your wedding? While it's unusual, it is possible that you'll miss a port. Personally, I'd have a ''courthouse" wedding first at the embarkation port or at home, then have the fun wedding at St. Thomas.

Also, remember that you have to go through immigration the morning you port in St. Thomas, as it's part of the US. Usually this goes well, but sometimes it can take a while. Your time in St. Thomas is longer on option #1.

For that reason and because an 8 day is better than a 7 day I voted for option #1. Option #2 looks too port intensive for me. We like a couple of Sea Days to relax.

Another consideration is airfare. It's usually less expensive to fly to FL than it is to fly to San Juan (at least for us in the US).

You have lot's of planning to do, but plenty of time !

Please come back and ask any questions you want. We love to help new cruiser's!

Thanks Fern, We are strongly considering getting married locally before the trip and celebrating a symbolic wedding on the beach with friends and family. We hear that St. Thomas is not skipped as often as other Ports of call. Is that true? Any other Island you recommend we look at for the wedding?

For option 1, the ship is only in San Juan for an evening, is there anything to do for an evening?

Again, thank you.

Hi Marc-Andre, really I've never heard of St. Thomas being skipped, I just wanted you to be aware that it was possible. We've not been in San Juan, but I'm sure someone will be along to answer that question .

I think getting the legal formalities done at home, and a symbolic wedding in the Caribbean is the best way to have a less stressful cruise...

I like the 8 day Freedom...for me, the best choices would be, St Thomas, St Maarten, Nassau, or Barbados....

In St Thomas, you could look into: St. Thomas Virgin Islands St. Peter Great House ..this venue does weddings I believe...also, try calling Bluebeards Castle, & Frenchmans Reef...all magnificent settings for a wedding.

In Barbados there is a wonderful beach called Sandy Lane....In Nassau, you can try the Ocean Club, or Atlantis..Not sure in St Maarten, but use the bureau of tourism websites to get helpful info.....

Sadly, in San Juan, there is not that much to do at night...the shops close around 8 ish...every touristy thing will be closed, but check the times, again, with websites.....You could cab over to the hotel district for a fine dinner, gambling, and a show, say, at the El San Juan...could be a costly night, and you could do the exact same thing on board for free

I hope you get all the info you need to make this a memorable time ofr all your family......Not knowing where you live...look into going down early because of the possibility of bad weather, and get travel insurance...this will also cover you for trip interuption, and baggage loss, and God forbid, anyone in your group should need medical attention and or evacuation. Let us know what you decide...good luck!

My son and Daughter-in-law got married in St. Thomas in 2007. They used the Carnival wedding planner and it could not have a better wedding. They were married at Bluebeards Castle overlooking the harbour with the ship in the background. Because it is a U.S. territory the wedding is considered "official" in the U.S. Application for the marriage license was handled thru Carnival Via the postal service. They had to go to district court before the wedding to prove their identity for the license this was also handled through Carnival as part of the package. Transportation to and from the wedding site for the wedding party and guests was also through Carnival. Wedding cake, champagne and small reception was at Bluebeards Castle and handled through Carnival. If you are seriously considering such a wedding start your planning early, contact Carnivals wedding planners and get started. I can not emphasize enough to plan early so that you can schedule what "YOU" want. I highly recommend using Carnival's wedding planning service and feel confident in saying that you will not be disappointed. I wish you the best of luck in your new life together!

I would like to suggest getting AT LEAST an ocean view cabin. A balcony would be better. There is usually a little more room. You can also sit out on the balcony and watch the ocean with a little privacy. If it is in the budget, I would consider a suite since it's your honeymoon and you will probably be in the room more than some would.
Using the Carnival wedding planner sounds like a good idea. They may be able to do a Plan B just in case there is a problem with the port. I understand that they use local clergy, not sure if the captain of the ship still still performs weddings.

Thanks for all the best wished, tips and comments. This is really helpful.

We are currently leaning towards option #1 on the Freedom. I'm glad to see that most agree with this choice. Anyone been on the Freedom? I'm a bit worried about some of the reviews for the Freedom. Our second choice is option #4, the Dream itinerary, however I'm afraid it might be a bit too big a ship as a first cruise. San Juan, Option #2 is too expensive for flights. Option #3 could be a good option but all the stops are not full days. I thought that might not be as interesting.

We will definitely use a wedding planner. If that doesn't work for weather or any other reason, we will do it at the next port call or on the ship. We are planning on getting married before leaving so this is more of a celebration with friends and family. We do hope it works out with the wedding on he beach.

We were also thinking of getting a suite for ourselves so we can entertain a few guests at a time.

Tanks "Trip" for the suggestions. We will look into St. Peter Great House, Bluebeards Castle & Frenchmans Reef.

All these look great, I would get the cruise that has the best value for all attending; flights, hotels, etc. I would also get married on the boat before hand as you could miss a port for many reasons. You could have a small ceremony on the island or a reception. Good luck to both of you
