Isn't there one cruise line that has a boxing ring on board? Seems to me this would be a better venue for selling booze at 3 am.:-)

The thing that really hits home is when they not only disembark the ones who caused the problem but also everybody in the cabins they occupied plus any folks who hit back for self protection.

As someone said, you cannot buy behaviour or class, a jerk is a jerk and cruise companies as they increase the size of ships must beef up their security staff and put on the cruise contract in BOLD what will happen if you damage ships property, staff or fellow passengers.

I do not think the average crew member has been trained to handle people in a fight on confined quarters. Can you imagine the safety issue being on the high seas especailly at night.

People need to remember that manners and behaviour are taught not bought.

Yes there is. RCL has them on their bigger ships.

It need not be a group of rowdy cruisers, but one mad cruiser, off his meds, as this story I read today on aol attests to. The part that got me was, that security passed the buck, as did the front desk. The saftey of this woman, seemed to swing in the wind, and, no one was interested at all

My husband and I decided to take a cruise in June 2010 to celebrate our anniversary. We booked an
an eight night cruise from New York to Turks & Caicos and the Bahamas on the Carnival Miracle. In the middle of the cruise, we took a shore excursion to Half Moon Cay, a private-island stop. We did a kayak adventure and afterwards were exceptionally hot, so we went straight to the beach. I was in the water cooling off while my husband found us a beach chair when an individual in his 20s walked past me and blew his nose into the water right beside me. I live in New York City, and when someone does something disgusting like that my instinct is to pipe up. This individual became instantly aggressive and angry and we had a brief exchange of words. At that time, my husband found us mid-confrontation and I said to him, "We need to just get out of here." We left the situation for a spot in much deeper water and way down the beach, but I had a feeling it wasn't over.

Sure enough, this man followed us down the beach and began making threatening gestures. He was using his index finger to make a slicing gesture to me and was punching one hand into the other while gesturing to me to get out of the water and confront him again. The whole time this was happening, it seemed so absurd. I kept thinking to myself "I'm a 32-year-old mom...and he wants to fight me? Really?" We ignored him, hoping he would relax and go away, but soon he came charging into the water toward us. He was beet red with fury and was blowing his nose everywhere, snorting. This time there were a lot of people around, safety in numbers at least. But he was furious that I had called him out. He screamed at us that he was bipolar and that he hadn't taken his medication since the cruise began. "You don't even know what I want to do to you right now!" he yelled. My hands up, I just kept telling him to calm down. When he began barking and grunting and spitting like a rabid animal, my husband gestured for back up from another passenger. This passenger was a large individual and we succeeded in getting him to leave. We watched him return to his beach chair, where an older man, whom I took to be the father, placed a towel over the guy's head while he rocked back and forth.

The only people who were on the beach that day were passengers on our ship. And while he had left our vicinity, I was still concerned for my safety. We went right to the lifeguard who said he couldn't help but called someone from island security who also explained that she wasn't able to do anything but offered to walk us back to our ship so we could tell security onboard. We tried to talk to the security guards who checked us back onto the boat but they also said that there wasn't anything we could do and that I should go tell someone at guest services. The agent working at guest services was disinterested, to say the least. After pretending to take notes, she told us to tell someone in security. At this point, with my nerves rattled, I got frustrated that there didn't seem to be a system in place for dealing with dangerous individuals. I told her that my only goal was to have the incident recorded in some official capacity because I was concerned for my safety and wanted to have something on record. I asked to have security call my room instead of wandering all over the ship and risking another run in. She asked for my room number and wrote it down. No one ever reached out to me from security or otherwise.

As it turned out, the individual who had been harassing me was on our floor and we continued to see him every day on the ship. We tried going for walks, and we would see him and his family lounging. As soon as they noticed us they would begin taunting us, trying to get us to have a confrontation again. We avoided it as much as possible and spent the remainder of our trip in our state room.

This thoroughly ruined my vacation. I felt like my safety was not a priority to the staff or the company.

At the very end of the cruise, I filled out the customer comment card and explained the entire story, providing my telephone number and email address asking for someone to contact me. We disembarked the boat and I waited a week and a half before I did anything more. In frustration, I started a blog. In response, I got a form letter, obviously cut and pasted, basically saying that sometimes when you put people together from different backgrounds, there can be tension

On my last cruise I defused a fight between a drunk 20 something and fellow passengers. The guy accused some older man of taking his sign & sale card. Turned out the barmaid had it. I calmly talked with the guy until security arrived. The kid was upset that he broke up with his girlfriend before the cruise and just wanted to be wasted as he put it.

When you read the authors post and response you want to say 'Bull Sxxx'

On the other hand though I can understand the authors concern,
two things stand out,
her way of dealing with things that bother her,
Quote: I live in New York City, and when someone does something disgusting like that my instinct is to pipe up"

Well she could have handled it in a different way as she is not in New York City. Not all of us appreciate someone we do not know yelling at us.

The other item was the passenger knew he was off his meds but somehow he was fine for the rest of the voyage and did not cause a viable concern to the other passengers or the ships crew.

Cheers

Sounds like you were a calming influence for him and I hope security did not give him a problem.

Well this was concerning, don't you think? For all we know, her blog could be on her facebook page.

"We tried going for walks, and we would see him and his family lounging. As soon as they noticed us they would begin taunting us, trying to get us to have a confrontation again."

As we all can attest to, there are always 3 sides to every story. The truth, in there somewhere...The confrontation aside for the moment. I think security, on the beach, and, on,board was lacking. What would have had to happen, that security steps in?

Her blog is a Google Blog spot reserved only for this event. As to Facebook their was no direct link though she of course would probaly have one as she is in Communication.

Put yourself in the Families situation as all they knew was this woman yelling at them so though they should have ignored her , they tried to rile here.
Not right but they would not know what would send her off.
Given the gentleman is Bi-Polar then unless you know the symptoms and what the triggers are , one can make judgements too hasty. I've seen many cultures where some of our or their habits can bother us. A cruise ship being enclosed is the wrong place to set things right from ones own viewpoint.

As to security , I agree, it could have been improved in terms of her comfort level and ensuring all passengers are safe from harm. The reporting was a bit off base but the story tells me unless you have an intelligent security person to obtain the facts correctly after the fact, this lady might have caused those passengers to be disembarked and perhaps her and her family. Would have gone out of control.

Cheers
Rob:-)

Rob, my bad..I should have clicked on her blog..[duh]

I take issue, when anyone who has a complaint, and shouts to the world, Don't ever sail this ship, help me spread the word,about____ etc, etc.

As if anyones circumstance on board, would influence me to not cruise that line or ship, or perhaps cancel a cruise based on what someone says..

If someone takes issue for any reason with a cruise line, and fights a good fight based on what they see as bad policy, bad food, lousy entertainment, that's their perrogative. I can comiserate, or disagree, but I don't agree with a smear campaign...I am so pooped, am I making sense or rambling G'nite

Hello Trip,
Nope, you are making sense. It was good of you to share the original post as it at least could give us the opportunity to, as you said, get to the facts and what was this really about and did the cruise line make a reasonable response.
Considering it had run from the beach security to the ship security to the pursers office to onshore Carnival and numerous correspondence, I'd vote Carnival responded best they could.
Internet info as you know has to be reviewed before one blasts off.

You have a good sleep, See you tomorrow.
Take Care:-)

Carnival may have a few people like this on some cruises, but I would never say this is the normal Carnival cruise passenger. So, this would not stop me from taking a Carnival cruise again.

I don't cruise based on who my fellow passengers will be, I cruise based on what kind of adventure I want for myself. But that's me. I also liked living in NY City and could ignore the homeless, etc. Not everyone is like me, some people are affected more.
Well, I certainly respect your choices - but given the number of posts by people who complain about rude behavior on cruise ships, I think that for most people it does matter. A ship is a pretty well-contained experience - you can't exactly walk on the other side of the street to avoid a rowdy bunch.
Like most working people, I have a very busy life and prefer to spend my vacation time away from lots of noise and confrontation. I'm fortunate that I have the luxury to choose the line I sail on, and given that luxury I will pick the cruise that will more likely offer a peaceful, relaxing experience. On my last two Carnival sailings, I had a balcony very near loud, obnoxious groups of "men" (really they were overgrown boys) that threw cigarettes and cigars off their balconies, made constant loud noise, and swore at everything. The most recent sailing featured a fight between two families at the buffet after a teenager knocked a tray out of a woman's hand. So - given the choice of a vacation on the QM 2 or the Dream, I'll take the QM 2.

Getting into a fight over a song????? Sad, really sad! Too bad these hoodlums couldn't of been made to walk the plank

Seriously though, a fight can happen over anything if there are a couple of people wanting to fight. Curious that so many were involved but I guess if I was there and someone started hitting me I would fight back. It could of just been a domino kind of thing that started with 2 people fighting and everyone else got caught up in it, not necessarily gang bangers.

happy sailings

Out in the Internet World....there are some kind of story about every cruise line and every ship.

From a group that was filming a gay porn movie in their cabin across the hall from a family with small children on RCCL to a bunch of thug teens trying to intimidate guests on Princess......

Stupidity knows no financial, educational or class boundary.
