I would never do this on a ships excursion..we cabbed over to the resort, and bought a ticket to The Dig,and aquarium, toured the area.. they showed us some of the feeding of the fish, etc,and then we went into the casino and shops, then, cabbed back to the ship...At the time the tickets were only like $25.00....sure to be more now, but, I bet less than the ship offers.

This is one excursion I would do on my own if I were you. I've stayed at the Atlantis and have been there 2-3 times while on a cruise. You can take a cab or water taxi. I personally would take a regular cab, as with the water taxi you will still have a pretty fair walk to get to the Atlantis from where the water taxi docks.
Have the cab driver drop you off in front of the casino. In the casino there is a booth where you can pay to tour the Dig and grounds. They will give you a bracelet to wear to show you've paid. You won't be allowed to use the pools, water slides, etc on the bracelet but will be able to tour the resort and grounds.
Simply take a cab back when you're through. I was there last time about a year ago and can't remember for sure but it seems like it was $30-35 per person.
One thing-- as I said we were there about a year ago and when it came time to sail, the ship started edging away from the dock and this couple came running down the pier waving, shouting, etc. The ship never stopped--last I saw of them they were watching us sail away as we watched them standing on the dock. So, be sure you know when the ship leaves and give yourself some time. The Atlantis and especially the Dig is worth seeing.

Personally, unless I have been to a place myself before and know exactly what to do, where to go, etc, I don't think that I would go anywhere on my own without a ship's excursion. On my last cruise in Cozumel, my excursion to the ruins in Tulum were an hour and a half late returning. The ship was scheduled to leave at 5:30 but we didn't get back until past 6:30. The ship pulled away as soon as we were on board. I am so glad that I booked an excursion because otherwise I would have been looking for a ride home!

If I were to do an excursion,in the Caribbean, that took me deep into the countryside of the ports, I would do them in the morning, to eliminate the possibility of not getting back to the ship in time, and really consider in this case, taking a ship excursion. The peace of mind would trump the price difference. When we went to Tulum, we did this.

In the port area, in Nassau, you can see the ships from Atlantis, so there is no worry about missing the ship...

I did the tour through the ship and it was never rushed, just haven't heard that ever....You can still go there via water taxi or regular taxi and do the tour when you get there...I don't know how that works, if you'd have to wait. It was just easier to purchase the tour through the ship and pick a time that works for us. At the end of the tour you are free to walk around, ship, use the casino, etc. Then when you were ready, you just walk to the water taxi and come back to the pier.

If time is not an issue, you can just go when you want and take the tour.

We took our nieces on a cruise specifically because they wanted to do Atlantis’ water park. (Cheaper than flying to and staying in Nassau). I understand that day passes from the casino desk are $25pp cheaper than the excursion from the ship but are on an “as available” basis only. We didn’t want to miss the chance to do the one thing we took the whole cruise for so we bought the ships excursion. The excursion included transportation, tour, and a basic lunch so the $25 difference isn’t so bad.

The “tour” part included being provided the appropriate wrist band, walked from the buses, through the shops and casino to the resort area. Directions to the different area and excursion locations were given and we were released into the resort. Very little was pointed out and there was no real tour provided but not an issue because the girls were ready to hit the water. We were allowed to explore where ever we wanted and did so after several hours in the park. The only problem is that all the shopping near the port was closed by the time we returned to the ship.

The water park and resort area was great and well worth the cost. Better than any water park we’ve been to before. We are planning to go back in 2012.
