Default What Are Your Top 5 Memories Of Your First Cruise?

What Are Your Top 5 Memories Of Your First Cruise? Many of us have sailed more than once, but the first cruise was filled with anticipation, wonder and perhaps many other thoughts. Since that first cruise there have been several on CCL, RCL NCL. . .but the first one still stands out.

My first cruise was on board P&O SS Canberra sailing 16 days from Los Angeles, CA to Auckland, New Zealand. So my top 5 are:

#5 Arriving at the pier in San Pedro, CA and see the ship from the car
#4 Standing on the deck throwing long streamers over the side of the ship
#3 Hearing the ships horn blasting as the ship pulled back from the pier
#2 Cruising under the Gold Gate Bridge in San Francisco for 1st port of call
#1 Six days at sea in the South Pacific after leaving Hawaii and enjoying the incredible dinning each night on this proud British Ship that is no longer in service. Her last cruise was September 10--30, 1997. She was scrapped a few year later. I have the mini life raft of P&O Canberra hanging on my office wall. Circa Oct 1969.

1973 -we were booked on the Amerikanis from NY to Bermuda but the ship had problems. Our TA gave us a choice ,a 60% refund or cruise on a Cunard ship.We opted for the latter and boarded the Cunard Ambassador.

Memory #2 -the bon voyage party
Memory #3 -we were touring on our own ,realized we only had 45 minutes to get to the ship-hitchhiked with a guy who turned out to be a rather nefarious individual.
Memory #4-an evening visit to a local club to hear local talent .After the steel drum player had several drinks bought for him by cruisers we found out that the guy was really from NJ
Memory #5 -getting seasick in both directions

That is some of the most unique memories I have read from this thread I posted. The guy was from New Jersey. OMG. . .sea sick both directions. . .hope you were not drinking both directions. Thanks for the memories and the smiles.

It wasn't so long ago - December 2004, Carnival Glory

1: We booked guaranteed ocean view - got balconies
2: The clear blue water of the Caribbean
3: Seven delightful dinners in a row with our young adult children
4: Seeing women in traditional Muslim dress watching the Carnival Christmas show on Christmas Eve (not burkas, but robed and with head covers)
5: Opening Christmas presents in our cabin

First cruise was on Carnival Conquest out of Galveston (7 day) to Mo-Bay, Grand Caymen and Cozumel.

5. That first step from the gang plank onto the ship. Realizing I wasn't going to step back on land for several days.
4. Chocolate melting cake!!! Still my favorite.
3. The sunsets on a perfectly calm Gulf of Mexico. Simply awesome.
2. Winning $1600 on a quarter slot machine after putting in $1.
1. Realizing while we were leaving the ship for home that I was addicted.

Green such great memories. . .you got a balcony up grade. How many cruises did you have on this cruise line? I have heard good reports on booking a guarantee room and getting an upgrade. What a wonderful Christmas experience.

1. ditto the posters first response, seeing the ship from the car
2. Dining with 3 other couples and hanging out with them the entire week
3. Standing next to the ship at the pier in Puerto Vallarta and being blown away by how big I thought it was. ( small by todays standards..lol)
4. the cruise director being so funny..he was an english guy who had 2 catch phrases.."Soopa" meaning super and "Stop it"..his name may have been Freddie but cant remember for sure..wonder what happened to him
5. asking my gf to marry me and giving her a ring under the moonlight on deck!

Just last year, Carnival Victory to the Southern Caribbean.
So many wonderful memories, hard to choose just 5!

So 5 of the ports:

1. An outlook place on St. Kitts where you could see the Atlantic ocean on one side of Nevis and the Caribbean on the other....absolutely breathtaking.

2. Trafalgar Falls in Dominica.

3. Swimming with the sea turtles in Barbados.

4. Dickinson beach in Antigua. Didn't want to leave!

5. The mineral baths in Soufriere in St. Lucia.

5 of the Ship:

1. The bed & bedding were so comfortable!!!!

2. The adorable towel animals.

3. Our amazing room steward, Ketut. Always greeted us by name and with a smile on his face and kept our room spotless.

4. Warm chocolate melting cake!!

5. Eating & drinking whatever & whenever without even a smidgen of guilt!

99 days until my 2nd cruise, Carnival Freedom to the Eastern Caribbean. Can't wait to make more memories!

1) Snow in Mobile the day before departure!

2) Dragging my only luggage - a heavy backpack - by its straps up the gangway wondering what I had gotten myself into

3) Going to sleep cold and waking up to swimsuit weather

4) Meeting some great folks through trivia competitions

5) My first authentic taste of mole sauce in Mexico - my mouth waters every time I think about it

Our first cruise was so long ago and there have been so many since then! It was in 1981 on Pacquet Cruise Lines Dolphin. What I remember (in no particular order)......

1. How big the ship was! It was just over 500 ft in length! I thought it was huge. :-D
2. I thought our cabin steward had a way of knowing when we entered and left our cabin, because it was always straightened and towels replaced, immediately!
3. Twin beds that could not be pushed together.
4. The exquisite cuisine in the MDR and complementary red and white wine in the evening.
5. Getting up early one morning, and watching the sunrise, with just my DH and I on the deck.

This was a 5 day cruise and it was $500 pp, including airfare Houston to Miami.

Sailed on Jubilee back in the 90's. Lasting impressions:

1. Arriving at the pier in Seward, Alaska and seeing this enormous ship. It was our 1st cruise ever.
2. The wonderful food in the dining room
3. The great stewards and crew
4. Our 1st view of the glaciers
5. And most impressive seeing eagles in their natural habitat

And now we are both platinum with Carnival and every cruise is a new adventure.

Our first cruise was for our honeymoon. It was in March 2008 on the Inspiration. In no particular order:

1. Walking off the covered gangway right into the atrium. Wow! What a view!
2. That crazy artwork in the buffet area. I know some people don't like it, but I thought it looked great.
3. Stepping off the tender in George Town, looking around, and realizing we were in the Caribbean.
4. Stingray City.
5. The day in Cozumel. Walking around the square downtown, checking out what the merchants had for sale, and sitting on deck as we pulled away while making a few very quick calls home.

You know as I sit hear and read all of your posts I just can't help but smile. And well here is my top 5.

My first Cruise what a 4 Day Western Caribbean aboard the Carnival Imagination.

1. Like most the size of the ship, but I was remarking on how small my ship was. The RCL Freedom of the Sea's left before us and again latter in port when we were parked next to the Glory.

2. I would have to say our room steward, she did such a great job, But she made it a point to knock on our cabin door every day right at 8 am. But it really wasn't a big deal.

3. The Food. I have worked in the restaurant industry for 6 years before my first cruise. And I know what good food is and I have to say while the was not the best I've ever had but it was very good and their was always seconds. = )

4. While in Cozumel we rented a Jeep, and no longer than 5 minutes from the rental agency we got pulled over by the Police and a 10 minute conversation he took my ID and said that I had to follow him to the Police station to pay a fine. We followed him for two minutes and then he went behind a shopping center and then got out and then started to talk to me again. I assume that he was looking for a bribe but we weren't about to give him any money he regrettably he gave me back my driver licence and told us to be on our way. This ended up being very funny to me and my friends.

5. Not wanting to leave. I loved every moment of this cruise that I wish it was longer.

I love cruising to me their is just no better way to vacation. Doesn't matter where I go just being out on the open water and just kicking back and having a nice drink.

What. . .twin beds that would make into a queen. Ah, that had to be not so fun. Well it was a long time back and maybe they had not thought about this trick. Don't you wish you could do another 5 day for $500 pp with air. Well, you have Galveston now and some great cruise bargains. Thanks for the memories.

Our room on the Fantasy out of New Orleans. . .the bed did join. . .helps the marriage

I experienced all of those above-mentioned first-time cruise awe-inspiring moments, but I really only have ONE significant memory of that first cruise in 1995, the Fascination out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and that was my most excellent Costa Rican waiter, who has now been my husband for more than 13 years!

Wow wow wasby.. . .A true Love Boat Experience

You fell in love and and married your cruise ship waiter. Question. . .is he still serving meals to you at the home?

I think we all get into a complete different frame of mind and attitude when we cruise. We view dally events with a different perspective. We are at sea. . .no stress. . .relaxing. . .and then we are open to new experiences. In your case. . .it was love. Wonderful memories and thank you for sharing this Love Boat experience.

Our first cruise was on the Elation. We couldn't wait to get on board. We were in awe of the beauty of the ship, the food, and crew was the best. On sea days the thrill of being out there was something you never forget, and don't want to leave, and then you can't wait to book your next cruise.

Howdy TexasPepper(s)!

I have my own unique tale about the Canberra! In the early '80's I was involved in a different type of "cruising". My trips were all courtesy of Uncle Sam. I was a prolific picture-taker back then. I took pictures of everything. While in Naples, Italy, I took a dramatic night shot of a moored cruise ship. This was around 1982. Later, while transiting the entire length of the Panama Canal, we passed a cruise ship heading the other way. I took a picture of it and never thought about it again. That had to be around 1985. Years later (1987 or so), my wife was working on putting all of my Navy pictures in an album, and she was asking me about them. It wasn't until then that I noticed both cruise ships were named "Canberra"! I will try to find my old album up in the attic, and scan in those pictures.

Default This has to be a Love Boat Experience

I have to say this is the most romantic of all the replies to the thread I started on Memories.of first cruise. It is from another board I am on, but wanted to share it with Cruise Mates. This is a true LOVE Boat Experience. Read it and decide for yourself. Let us know what you think!

WOW! Whata 1st cruise!
Widowed the year before, in 1990 I booked the Dawn Princess, San Juan-Los Angeles. Decided to "check out" every sweet young thing on the 2 week sailing thru the Canal.
2nd night out, met this lovely young creature. We played trivia, walked the top deck in the Caribbean moonlight and talked.
3rd night out, same thing.
4th day, had our 1st date in Curacao. Treated her to pizza lunch on board. (big spender) 5th day saw her all day and evening 6th " " " " "
7th " " " " "
8th - 14th day same thing.
Never got around to "checking out" any of the others.
We've been married now for 18 years!

Yes That Is The Canberra DryCreek. . . .wow what memories. She was such an elegant ship. Served Her Magistry the Queen of England and the British Troop when they went to the Falkland Islands to secure British lands. As I mentioned we sailed her in September 1969 from Los Angles, San Francisco, Vancouver, Canada, Hawaii and ending in Auckland, New Zealand. I was moving to NZ to live. Lived there 2 years and then moved to Australia. Flew the first Pan Am 747 from Nandi, Fiji to Sydney. . .the first Pan Am flight to Sydney.

Default Celebrity Infinity 2001 Alaska

Our first Cruise was the Alaska Inland Passage in August 2001 on the Celebrity Infinity.

Five things to remember;

- It was its first year sailing to Alaska from Vancouver BC and we just took a bus from Vancouver Island and never saw our luggage till our room

- The Balcony to relax on in splendour

- On Glacier day to see a Jamaican crew member dressed in a down parka selling Hot Chocolate on the sun deck.

- The Food

- The whole experience of being a valued guest

Here was my review.

Couldn't think of five as such, but it was something my wife & I had always wanted to do. We flew to Barbados for two weeks on Ocean Village (UK styled but no dress codes, mostly self serve), a virtually perfect holiday with so much variation & different places to see. We did tire of buffet style meals so used the speciality venues a lot on week #2. We were hooked!!
