Default Luggage Limits?

I saw this info on another cruise forum. Is there any truth in this, or is it meant for persons flying in to their ship. This seems to be the limits for flights.

Printed my luggage tags for an upcoming Carnival cruise.

Now, there are weight & size limits on what we are allowed to be checked on these for boarding the ship. About the same as airlines.

Each suitcase should not weigh more than 50 pounds and not exceed 24"w x 16"h.

Is this new?

The size restrictions are referring to what you can carry-on the ship, it has to fit through the scanner, just like at the airports. The checked luggage has no limits, but it never pays to overpack, even if you are not flying into your departure port.

The only real requirement is that it has to fit in your cabin.

They are trying to cut down on the size and weight of what you check, but there are currently no limits, enforced or otherwise.

Yes it is true for Carnival. I have printed my tickets for our Nov cruise and it is printed on the luggage tags. it has been like this for Carnival for about a year. One of my tagged suitcases is over 24 inches, in fact it is 30 but have not had a problem with it being accepted. Not sure how much mine ever weigh since we drive to the port so don't have to worry about the airlines.

It is also part of the Travel Notes from Carnival.

Actually looking at the travel notes it is 16H x 24W x 30L. For carry on it is 16H x 24 W.

I would be surprised if in the near future the lines do start being stricter, but as long as the airlines are actually weighing them they figure there are very few pieces that are over the weight limit.

Default Luggage Limits

You all said what I was thinking. The carry on would have to fit through the scanner. Thanks for the answers.

This is from Carnivals FAQ's

Guests are encouraged to limit their checked luggage to two suitcases per person, with each suitcase not to weigh more than 50 pounds and not exceed 16"H x 24"W x 30"L. Please attach your Carnival Cruise Lines luggage tags PRIOR to leaving home and make sure that they are still on your bags when checking in with us. In many ports, guests have the option of carrying luggage on board at embarkation and off the ship at the end of the cruise as long as it does not exceed 24"W x 16"H x 30"L. This is an advantage you may want to consider as it will allow for quicker easier access to your bags. Please note that Carnival assumes no responsibility for carry-on luggage.

NCL has had something similar for awhile (2 pieces of checked luggage, 50 lbs. each). Cruise lines are becoming more and more like the airlines as far as restrictions go.

However, if you are flying to your port, you are probably limiting the size/weight and number of your suitcases anyway, due to airline fees.

We were on the Splendor in April and there were indeed luggage restrictions. Whether they were enforced or not is another story. When I read the restrictions I repacked my luggage to fall within the 50lb limit. and measured with and height as well.

Since I always have to fly into the port, I have to already pack with the weight restrictions, so I don't have a problem with the cruiselines using the same guidelines. I just hadn't heard that they too have the restrictions.
