Default St. Thomas Excursion Recommendations??

My wife and I are going on the October 23rd Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Dream. We are frequent Western Carib cruisers but this will be our first trip to St. Thomas. We have gone through the available Carnival excursions several times but were unable to find anything that just jumped off the page at us.

We have done helmet diving and beginning SCUBA at other ports so those are not high on the list. The other excursion feature that rates pretty low on our list is anything that involves long ferry trips to get to the destination. We had a particularly unpleasant ferry ride to and from the mainland from Cozumel on our May cruise on the Oasis. Watching nearly half of the passengers being seasick from the extremely rough trip did nothing to enhance our experience.

Any suggestions (positive or negative) about the available excursions on St. Thomas would be greatly appreciated.

I would tend to agree with you, that nothing may jump off the page for you. St. Thomas is so well known for shopping, and beautiful beaches, that, even my fave excursion company only offers a St Thomas, island highlight tour, which I happen to enjoy, seeing an island,and getting a feel for it.

But...if you can just do a 20 minute ferry ride, to the magnificent island of St.Johns, you can reap the bounty of wonderful snorkeling...the blurb below will give you, some info.....Also St Peter Greathouse has beautiful gardens if that interests you, Blubeards Castle is also interesting..Both of these places you could do on a tour..an island tour is something you can get off the ship, as there are wonderful cab tours, that will take you all over...You can take a tram ride to the mountain top, have a pina colada and enjoy the view,and then shop till you drop, with several thousand of your fellow cruisers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are two ferry routes. The shortest route is between Red Hook on St. Thomas and Cruz Bay on St. John. That trip costs only $6.00 each way, takes approximately 20 minutes and runs hourly between 6:00 am and Midnight. The longer ferry route runs from downtown Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas also to Cruz Bay on St. John. The earliest ride leaves Cruz Bay at 8:45am in the morning and the latest returns from Charlotte Amalie at 5:30 pm in the evening. That run costs $12.00 each way and takes approximately 40 minutes.
We just took a cab to Magen"s Bay and then returned to town for a little while. Next time we might take in Blackbeard's castle and do the sky ride.
I'll have to chime in with Trip, a visit to St. Johns is worth the time and effort, just a beautiful island, even if you don't snorkel. Great way to spend the day. You can also shop at the pier if you have time to pick up some last minute things.
Thanks, Donna. We are taking another look at the St. Johns options.
Just returned from a wonderful cruise on the Dream. St Johns is by far the best excursion we have ever done. The island is beautiful and the beach is the best ever!!! Ferry ride was only 20 minutes, we took the Carnival excursion.:-):-)
The beach was Trunk Bay. We were on the St Johns Trunk Bay Beach and snorkle excursion.
See if you can make it to the Isle of Tortola; I had a great time there. No restaurant chains. Friendly people who all know each other and treat you like family. Virtually no crime...
Thanks, Grandy. That is probably the excursion we will book. Hopefully Hurricane Paula will be long gone by then.
