What about the BIG SHIP with a small ship feel. Its just how you find your comfort zone where you are.

Cool

We where on the Mariner of the Seas in 08 . Found the ship to big and noisy.
It was poorly laid for our liking. It was hard to find (didn't find one) a quiet spot on deck that didn't have music or just plain noise.

How about this size? I sailed the old Sun Princess twice in the early 1980's. Hard to believe they were that small.

We've sailed the DREAM. It was nice, but the layout was kinda confusing. The service was terrible. THey say they pulled the "Best of the best" for that ship, but somehow I doubt it.

On Grandeur OTS a few months ago, our waitress was telling us that RCL wanted people to sign up for Allure/OAsis, but no one wants to go. She was afraid that as her contract was up - she might have to go to one of the big ships and she really didn't want to.

I am wondering if the same was true for Dream, and while they say the have the "Best of the best" .... they really just got whoever was willing to take the contract. Our wait team on the Dream, was our worst one ever.

For RCL, I think I am most at home on their Voyageur Class. I will one day (when prices come down) sail Allure/Oasis. While we like an inside cabin, I don't think I'd pay for one with a balcony. It's not of interest to me. I would think it would be noisy too, no? I've heard that about the rooms at the Luxor in Vegas, that you get all the nosie of the casino wafting up into those rooms which look out into the hotel.

I don't know where that waitress got her information. When I was on the Oasis we an excellent crew. The service was outstanding, so they are not having any trouble getting people to work on those on those big ships.

A bartender friend moved from the Voyager to the Allure. He says he loves it.

Maybe they don't want to go, but love it once they get there? Maybe she just doesn't like big ships, I don't know. She told us that, at least on grandeur, no one wanted to sign up.

Royal has always had excellent service, so I'm not surprised, you both had great crews.

Disclaimer: This is my opinion, not yours, so be respectful. We are all the owners of our own opinions and it isn`t fair to slam someone else in an open forum where everyone is literally expressing THEIR opinions.

The fact is we all choose the ships we go on because of what the ships offers and the ports it visits. I do not choose a ship for wow factor or world record status.

I do not want to pay extra at two or more restaurants for a good meal
I do not want to try to surf
I do not want to rock climb
I do not want to ice skate (I can skate on the icy sidewalks walking to the bus stop to go to work every morning for six months of the year)
I really don't enjoy ice skating shows
I could care less about parades or shopping promenades onboard the ship
If I wanted to watch an aqua show I'll go to Vegas and see Cirque du Soliel's "O"
I do not want to make reservations ahead of time to see a show, I'd rater wing it and decide on the night if I want to go or not

I want to relax, have fun, and eat good food. Most of all, I want to feel like I am on a ship at sea!

I have checked the layouts of all these new ships and some of the monster ships really have no appeal to me, but if you like it GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!
I`d be happy going on any ship that goes where I want to go, is priced right, and is suitable for what I want to do on MY, emphasis on MY, vacation.......

Welcome to the geezer club! Our first ship was NCL;s Sunward II (only 14,000 tons) and our largest so far is the Golden Princess (113,000 tons). Like you stated, the Sunward II had a totally different feel and we fell in love with cruising because of it.

Flame you ? Nobody should flame you.
I agree that bigger could be less. You are right on about ports and ocean adventure should be the reason for a cruise....so they can forget about me booking a cruise to rock climb or ice skate.

I just read a review on the Allure of the Seas (like the Oasis..the biggest around) and it included something I had never thought about...

CUSTOMS.

Even if the ship can get the folks off efficiently....seems Customs can completely gum up the works if they want to....

and the ships (regardless of the size) has no control over what Customs does !!

something to think about....when adding all those extra bodies....

after getting off the Dream two weeks ago I really don't believe bigger is better. I found you loose the personal touch with the bigger ships sometimes.

I respect all of your opinions and wish happy cruising to everyone.

I do however enjoy the larger ships. I liked the Carnival Liberty better than the Sensation.

I have cruised on the Oasis of the Seas and found no negatives. My DW and our friends were very happy with the Oasis and our next cruise is on the Allure OTS.

We are very fortunate to have so many ships to choose from.

TM

PS I have not had a bad cruise in all the ships that I have sailed on.

I'm with your favorite sister in law. Perhaps that is because the earlier cruises were the best and they were on small ships. Santa Paula, Santa Rosa, Oceanic and Tropicale. We're going on a Voyager Class again in January, but we don't skate (roller or ice) don't rock climb and not into malls so it is all wasted space to us. We take a suite and spend lots of quiet time in our cabin or on our balcony away from the hordes of people.

I don't remember ever having a bad cruise but some have been better than others.

Oct we are booked on a B2B on the Dream and this will be the largest ship we have sailed on. I have read negitive and positive post but we all have our opinions.

We have been on the Spirit many time because it sails our of San Diego where we live and there has been times that I thought some of the crew were rude but then again, someone might have been having a bad day which most of us have had.

Now one of my biggest complaints is that some people that take their children do not watch them and just let them take over the ship. I know Thanksgiving cruise, there were more children on that cruise than I have every seen in the past. Don't get me wrong, I love children, I have 2 that are now married and have given me grand-children.

On that cruise, they were getting on the elevators and pushing all the floors and blocking the stairs. At night was the worse, running up and down the halls and knocking on doors. After a few days, a LOT OF PEOPLE started to complain and one lady says, that she doesn't worry about her children because they can't get lost. Another person told someone that was in line that he paid a good fair to cruise so his children could do what they wanted.

Needless to say, that had to put security on all decks and around other area to keep the kids in check.

Ok, now I feel better I got that off my chest.
