Default Best BEACHES in Limon, Costa Rico

We have a group that will not be going on the zip lines and want to swim and snorkel. What is the best beach to go to and how to get there. Carnival does not offer any activity for a beach.

April 9th on Freedom

Default Don't go to the beach

Trust me when I say do not go off on your own in Limon Costa Rica.
Do your swimming and snorkling in Cozumel. The crime (daytime muggings of cruise passengers) in Limon is really high due to over 40% unemployment there. There will be a "warning" in you Carnival Capers newspaper you receive
the evening before you get there pretaing to this. Take a tour with Carnival.
We did the Rainforest 2 hour boat tour $89.50 per person. It was educational
and we saw spider monkeys swinging through the trees it was really cool.
Also if you are going to Colon Panama. No beaches it is just a shipping container port. Same deal here on crime too but don't let it ruin your trip. Have a great cruise and stay safe. Ed

We were recently in Limon on the Zuiderdam. HAL offers no beach excursions in Limon. We did the Tortoguero Canal tour which was OK. It included a stop at a banana plantation which is a time-killer, nothing more. One couple on this trip hired a local taxi and he gave them a great tour with lunch at a local restaurant. They loved it. I would not just go walking about alone.

When we were in Limon in 1987, the pier had just opened. At that time, the cruiseline offered an excursion which included a beach outing with BBQ. We loved it but I guess now they don't want to expose tourists to the locals. The town area and outskirts are not very attractive with a good deal of poverty. As I commented to my husband, this doesn't look like anything I've seen on House Hunters International. ! More upscale communities are being built on the western coast of CR.

Agree.

This is not a port for a beach stop anyway! They have had a LOT of rain this season and the local beach was not very nice.

It's a great port for jungle and environmental tours. You asked about beaches.

Default Limon - Colon

We were thinking the same thing (Why would Carnival bring to a place that is unsafe) ? Please understand we were on the ship not knowing any of this.
You still have some options since your cruise is so far in the future.
This is just a suggestion. See if you can change your date to April 23rd
8 Day Freedom Eastern Carribean - 5 Ports instead of 3.
San Juan, Puerto
St Thomas
Antiqua
Tortola
And Nassau, Bahamas
It will cost some extra money to change dates
but it's just a option. Ed

Who gets on a ship not knowing anything about the ports? This is our next cruise and we are looking forward to kayak through the jungle in Panama, haven't decided what to do in Limon yet. You don't get to traipse through the tropical rain forest much in Indiana.

If you ever cruise the Baltic there are few good beaches in St. Petersburg.

Yeah:

It's a real pit. This is what you can expect in Limon. That is if you get the heck out of town.

Find a guide or cab and ask them if they know where "Johnny Dixon's" Restaurant is. It is a great restaurant on a beautiful beach. Many ship's crew go there.

Take care,
Mike

We are going with a group of 75-100, I don't have a choice of which ship or places.
