Sorry if this has been asked before. I assume most people fly into Houston. From this point on I am wondering how most people get to the port? I'm not interested in the Carnival transfer because I would fly down the day before the cruise departed.
Galveston is a drive-friendly NOT a fly-friendly port.
Rental is good option.
Galveston is one circumstance where flying in on day of embarkation may be the easiest way to travel. The cruise shuttle is really the best option here.

My daughter and I cruised out of this port a few years back. We flew into Houston in the middle of a terrific rain storm the night before the cruise. We rented a car at the airport and drove ourselves to Galveston (what a storm!). It was very easy to get from Houston to Galveston. The next day the rental agency drove us to the port and took possesion of the car. Easy as pie! After the cruise we used the shuttle Carnival offered back to Houston. Hope this helps...
We flew into Houston the day before and stayed at an airport hotel (I think it was Hampton Inn) with a free shuttle to and from the airport. The morning of the cruise we took the hotel shuttle back to the airport and took the Carnival transfer.
It worked well for us .
