Default Carnival Cancels Additional Splendor Cruises

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Splendor Update
CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES CANCELS ADDITIONAL VOYAGES OF CARNIVAL SPLENDOR AS REPAIRS CONTINUE

Ship Now Scheduled to Re-Enter Service February 20

MIAMI (December 15, 2010) Carnival Cruise Lines has cancelled additional departures of the Carnival Splendor including the January 16, 23, 30 and February 6 and 13, 2011, voyages to allow for additional repair time following an engine room fire aboard the vessel in November. The ship is now scheduled to re-enter service February 20, 2011.
As repairs have progressed and damaged components tested, additional issues have been discovered. Also, some of the needed parts are not readily available and are being manufactured in Europe. The ship is currently in San Diego, however, it will sail to San Francisco in mid-January where repairs will be completed at a dry dock facility.
"We sincerely apologize to our guests for having to cancel these additional cruises," said Gerry Cahill, Carnival's president and CEO. "We made our best effort back in November to estimate the necessary repair time with a strong goal of not having to modify it at a later point in time. Unfortunately, as the repairs have progressed and we have discovered additional issues, it is now clear that we need more time. We know this is extremely disappointing for our guests and particularly disheartening for those who already had their vacations cancelled once and are now being affected again."
Guests booked on the cancelled voyages will receive a refund or future cruise credit equal to the amount paid, along with reimbursement of air transportation-related change fees. Those who re-book may also receive a 25 percent future cruise discount and/or onboard credit depending on the ship and sailing date of the new booking. Additional details are available at carnival.com.
Carnival is contacting travel agents and guests affected by the new cancellations to provide assistance. Travel agent commissions on cancelled sailings are being protected.
Carnival Splendor operates year-round seven-day Mexican Riviera voyages from Long Beach, Calif.

That is the pits for a lot of cruisers. They had to run to a considerable amount of unexpected damage to need that much more time to work on her.

I will not be surprised if some of the added repair time involves making modifications to existing systems and some design changes.

Not good news for those booked for sure.

Someone remind me: The Splendor was originally being built for which line before being changed to Carnival? Hopefully they are checking on it's sister ships for possible flaws.

Even though originally being built for Costa, it is still a derivation of the old Destiny design, just mo' bigger.

The layout of the ship was already a little different, before Farcus took it to a different dimension.

What a same for both cruisers and Carnival...I figured it was a parts problem, but these things and repairs do take time....How unfortunate!

Default Splendor cancellations

We were booked for Jan 6th, 2011 which was cancelled. After alot of rebooking and change of plans we rebooked Splendor to Feb. 27th. I certainly hope they do not cancel any additional cruises. There are 6 of us going and this is the first cruise for 4 of us - not a great start to cruising.

I booked a group of 60 people on the Carnival Splendor over a year ago for a Jan 9th 2011 sailing. Then along comes the fire.
Our cruise was canceled, so I rebooked on the Splendor for Feb 6th after a week of arguing with Carnival over the price. Then our Feb 6th cruise was canceled. I gave up on the Splendor and moved my group to the Liberty out of Miami after another week of arguing with Carnival over pricing. Their offer of a 25% discount was a joke; they raised the prices on everything so the discount didn’t matter. I wrote an email to Carnival and they sent me a rubber stamp reply saying “sorry”. I have been booking a group each year for 11 years and Carnival acted like they couldn’t care less. I realize that my groups of 50 to 70 people are a drop in the bucket compared to the 3000 or so people on the ship, but over the years I’ve booked a considerable number of people with Carnival and my loyalty didn’t mean squat to them. I have never sailed on anything but Carnival, but this experience has made me rethink my loyalty to them.

I see that ship everyday when I go to work and it just sits there in port.

We were on her in Jan 2010 and if you like "Pink" then you will like this ship. Even the hand rails are pink. Too much pink for me.
