Do you think that Carnival will pick a new port or have another sea day? We are sailing on the Legend next month. Thankfully, we have not yet scheduled an excursion for Belize. I think I may hold off til I see how this plays out.

That would be best. If you do book, the safest way is to book thru the ship not privately. This way if they do pass the port you get a refund immediately.

Carnival has cancelled four visits so far to Belize with some truly lame excuses. Seems they have stuck their heads into a hornet's nest by importing a tour operator from Jamaica, much to the consternation of the local operators who have been in the business for over 30 years there; then Carnival has tried to insert their own Miami choice to handle the lucrative tender operations, and that upped the anti. The news in Belize is full of a lot of vitriol about Carnival; now there's news of public demonstrations being organized on Carnival's visiting days in Belize. Going down with news of the Egypt and Tunisia crises, and other unfriendly situations worldwide, this does not augur well for people going ashore in Belize. Sure hope Carnival gets its act together before Belize collapses for them as a destination. The place is fabulously friendly and beautiful. Other website forums are full of news of the controversy there and does not make Carnival look good at all, or make guests going there feel good at all....hope this clears up.

Your only getting ONE side of the story! Both sides are blowing smoke.

It's just a simple shakedown: The NEW Prime Minister is trying to get $ from Carnival. Carnival can not give in as then every 'two-bit' official in the Caribbean would expect the same.

It will be resolved by then. My next trip is later this month, I'm hoping we'll be able to go. I love Belize.

That's one of the reasons we booked that cruise because we have heard good things about the port but we will wait and see.

I have never been there - what is there to see (glad to hear it is a good stop).

BTW: I think the tender situation is kind of ridiculous - of course Carnival wants the best tenders for its guests. When the island tries to dictate to the cruise line what vessels will be used and it isn't working out for the cruise line I think at some point the line has to pull rank and say "hey, they're our guests. If you can't deliver we can't stop here."

It isn't like they don't have their own tenders on the ship.

Good point Paul.

Sure they will feel the crunch like Mazatlan has/will. Going to hurt their pocket books.

Didn't Carnival already pay the Prime Minister and Belize several million dollars which the Belize government has now tied up? I believe the money was to build up the port of initial entry (where the tenders allow the passengers to disembark). Is this story untrue, is it just a myth? They need a lot of work that's for sure. The port of entry is a dump and seems to get worse each time we travel there. Once you get out of port there are some beautiful places.

Your right Chris, fool me once, fool me twice deal. Although that was with a different PM. The new one wants his taste. (BTW-That's just my opinion)

This issue has become very political. The passions of some on the Belize side are amazing. Many see it as a little guy vs. big corporation, but it's not that simple.

It's a beautiful country and I've seen much worse ports of entry. Hopefully this will be settled soon, I'm there on February 23rd-maybe.

From Texas we'd prolly get Costa Maya. It's nice.

Hope they don,t choose Grand Cayman as this is not even close as a substitution and very expensive to boot.
