Default Table Mates

We have only had a table for 4 but if we just went with what they assign us, how do they decide whom you sit with? Do they match families with teens with other familes with teens or is it just a random placement from what you have experienced?
Thanks

They do attempt to match families with families.... but if there's a particular setting you'd like you should request it through your travel agent. Then it will be noted in your booking.

My personal experience has been that it is random. I've actually seen non-English speaking couples placed with English speaking couples. Not a great fix-up in my opinion. Best to speak to the Maitre'd upon boarding if you are at all concerned.

Most likely I will just request a table for the 3 of us. I was just wondering how they decide where to put people. It would be kind of strange sitting with people you couldnt talk to. Getting closer to my cruise and I am getting excited!!!

On our 1st Carnival cruise we sat at a booth...it was like eating supper at home Make your wishes known, early, so they can accomodate you.

Friends of ours who only cruise with RCL have said that whenever they cruise they are always put at a table with people who live in the same state as them . We've only cruised 4 times but we have always been with people living all over the world .

4 is too much of a risk...the other two (or you) could be horrible.
6 is good as long as you don't get put with 4 travelling together.
8 to us is ideal.
10 too big & the table splits into groups.
Do try a larger table, cruising is a great social occasion & opportunity to meet other people, tables for two sound nice but it can get a bit ''quiet'' sitting together for maybe 2 weeks.

In my experience, it has always been random, and I often request to move tables once assigned-- one of the first things I do once I board the ship is check out the location of my assigned table. If I don't like the location, I immediately request a change. This is even before meeting the peeps at my table so has nothing to do with them. "No one puts baby in a corner"....lol...(Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing) and I for some reason have often had the bad luck of getting assigned that table in the deepest corner of the dining room.

My very first Carnival cruise was also a booth, only I actually didn't mind it as it was perfect for our group of 4.

I always dreaded getting an "officers table" being stuck with some posh officer making small talk...BUT when we did for the first time we were on Arcadia, & had the most normal charming officer you could wish to meet, he also brought a colleague down on several occasions.

We prefer a small table of four when we are with our kids (I don't want to end up seated with someone's bratty kids )

When's it is just DH and myself .... we like tables of 6 or 8. On our first cruise, we met a wonderful couple from Indiana with whom we are still friends to this date. We exchange gifts and cards each year.... but we have met to meet again. They've planned a couple of trips to Toronto unfortunately, it hasn't worked out.

On the full charter Capital Jazz Cruise on the Carnival Liberty, it was open seating for both dinner times (due to assigned concert times)..we had an absolutely incredibly talented and beautiful hostess and she made table assignments based upon specific request or by pure instinct of sizing up guests on site...her system worked so well, on the last night at the early seating (Silver Dining Room level 3) we gave her a standing ovation and I presented her with Mardi Gras beads..I asked her how she could gauge guests and she said experience plus since everyone on the charter cruise was a smooth jazz lover (and thus instant rapport),which made it very easy..I wrote a letter to Carnival corporate about her people skills

we really enjoyed sitting with different table mates every evening

It looks like many of you had positive experiences dinning with others. I have nothing against it, I was just wondering if they place families with teens with smiliar families. Meeting people from all over the world is awesome but my son is shy and feels funny about it.

Julia, once your request is put in, I am sure it can be accomodated..Check your table once you board....if by chance it is not to your liking, ask the maitre'd for a change. I can bet the waiter and your son, will be pals by the end of the cruise, and, he will have enjoyed the experience.

Please come back, and share your experience....

This is one reason I love anytime dining. You don't have to worry about getting "stuck" with someone you arent comfortable with for the duration of a cruise. Of course, we have had experiences we have sat with people and we did enjoy ourselves. Multiple times they have place myself and daughter with another single/div father traveling with children. Once it was very awkard as it was a booth that held 4 people. I did ask to get moved to a table for 2 and the next night we were moved as I requested.

My experience of observing tables for two is that they spend most of the meal in silence & are finished very quickly. Our table for eight is a lively fun & stimulating area where we have to watch the time as the waiters are laying up for breakfast & we may miss the show.

One of our favorite dining experiences involved being seated with a couple from Vietnam. They spoke very little English. I had so much fun encouraging them to try new things, like escargot! We really enjoyed them and shared a table with them for a week. At the end, I had tears in my eyes when I said good-bye. They were just so sweet.

Thanks for all your experiences and advise. I think this cruise we will book for just the 3 us, and it is never silent or quick as we always have a great time together but next year when DH and I cruise without son we will try sitting with a bunch.
