Many times. Used to rent one every time, but now just use taxi. Island has become so busy and I like to have a few drinks so taxi is best for me. BTW- You can go anywhere on the island on taxi fare for less than the rental fee.
It's much easier to rent once you get there.

I agree with Snoozman about just taking a taxi. There are threads devoted to jeeps and mishaps on the island. Accidents are dealt with differently than in the states.
If you rent, make sure you get full insurance coverage - it is basically illegal to get in an accident in Mexico and even if you are not at fault, they could hold you for a while, just in case (missing the ship). The insurance amounts to a get out of jail card.
Guess I am the odd man on the totem pole here regarding renting a jeep... we always do and usually travel with 1 other couple and split the cost. Explore the island, bars, food and beaches..... a great day can be had for minimal expense and at our pace. Just take out full coverage. We rent in advance at Hertz just to secure a reservation, but if another "reputable" agency offers for less, we go that route too !
As posted recently, you need to fully understand the extent of your liability when WITH full insurance.
For example....IF you happen to hit someone on a moped....YOU are responsible for their loss of wages in CASH. This is not covered in your insurance like in the US.
Especially if drinking is going to be involved...I would recommend taking a taxi.
