Smile Carnival Spirit Alaskan Cruise

Hello All- I was just trying to get some sort of information about this cruise ship. Maybe some recent reviews from passengers that have taken this cruise. Any insight or suggestions (on or off the ship) you have to build our cruise itinerary up would be greatly appreciated. Or if you have anything that you think is a 'must do' or anything to stay away from!

Thank you! Hope to hear back soon!

Oh I'm so jealous!!! I have gone on Carnival spirit twice to Alaska. The first glacier bay in September and the second was in the month of May southbound and I have to say the month of May was by far the best time! Save your money - and go all out! When will you be to Alaska next? We spent 400 bucks (each) on walking the glacier in Jeaunu after a helicoptor ride. OMG - I would do it again in a heartbeat! What ports are you going to and I'll tell you what we did if I can remember..lol. You will love the ship - you will love everything about the trip!!! I hope you have a balcony!! the views are breathtaking!

We did September , all fingers of the glaciers. It was breath taking. We also did the heli, landed on a glacier, again it was just something you can not put into words, or pictures for that matter. The ship is also great. We have plans of doing Alaska again someday. As Cheryl said, do NOT skimp, go all out for your cabin, there is just too much to see to fight the crowds on the decks. Enjoy yourself. WIWT

Thank you both for replying, we are going in middle-late august this coming summer. The ports are Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Victoria B.C. We are really excited to be able to go, I know you talked about somethings to do off of the ship but anything in the ship that is something we don't want to miss?

We did that cruise a few years ago and it was awesome so we booked another one this coming July. You will love the Spirit, we have sailed her many time out of San Diego. Most recent one was this past Feb but now they are moving it to Seattle for the Alaska trips. We always get a belcony, worth the extra $$ IMO.

Victory is a waste of time getting off the ship because you will not be there that long and last time, most of the shops were closed. Disappointed to say the least. The other posts of call were awesome. We love the salmon bakes. Going to where they train the dog sledding was great. Great presentation and got to ride in a cart like a golf cart and dogs love to run. There are lots of great tours.

Default More questions......

Does anyone know if you can get last minute free upgrades on Carnival Spirit? When should we start to investigate that? What items and tips should we bring with us that would be beneficial? Thanks getting excited .... We're down to 19 days now.

We did a great Orca whale watching excursion in Victoria. Yes, it got cold out there on the water, but they provided some really warm jackets. There were plenty of pods out there and they seem to know them, they come back year after year, very interesting.

This is exactly what we would have said ! We went in September Glacier Bay. You really do need to do the helicopter thing and for sure get a balcony.

Pack keeping in mind things that you can layer and put on or take off and carry in a small backpack ashore. Maybe a travel raincoat.

Be ready with a camera at all times !! Maybe have one you keep out on the balcony all the time.

The train ride up the mountain was fun. Grap the seat in the first rows for the heaters !

Don't count on any upgrades on your cruise. Generally, all cruises these days, especially Alaskan, are full. I agree with the other's about layering your clothes. We cruised to Alaska in May a couple of years ago and the weather was incredible! We never needed even a light jacket. (Your mileage may vary !)

I also agree that a balcony is great if you can swing it! Otherwise be sure to be on deck as often as possible.

Have a wonderful cruise ,

Smile Just got back!

Please I highly encourage you to take the am train ride in Skagway. Also if you can afford it take the Taku Glacier Lodge & Wings Airways | Adventure Tours | Juneau Shore Excursions | Glacier Flightseeing | Juneau Alaska float plane/salmon bake excursion in Juneau. They just talked about it this am on Good Morning America! It was one of the best excursions we have taken! If you have a balcony room bring a bungee cord with you so that you can prop the door open at night! Have a great time!

As stated above upgrades are very unlikely.
We are on the Aug 23 trip and it is sold out.

We just got back from the Alaska cruise this past month and as always it was GREAT! We have made this trip twice and this time the weather was perfect!

Our first stop was Skagway and if you don't book a tour then there isn't much to do in Skagway. The town is the smallest one of the ports you will stop at and few shops and a few places to get something to eat. You can walk the whole town in about 30-45 minutes.

All other ports, lots to do and LOTS of shops and of course lots of tours. Ketchikan, the weather was like San Diego, in the mid 70s and not a cloud in the sky.

Told my wife, that we would stay on board when we got to Victoria because the last time we got there, nothing to do. This time was no exceptions. Got to port about dusk and when we took the bus into town, most shops were close or closing so we found something new, a StarBucks and had a cup of coffee and watch people for a while and then back to the ship.

On another note. Our first three days, spent most of the time in our Cabin. My wife has COPD, and she was real short of breath when we got to Seattle and we were at sea for approx. 3 hours and thought we might have to air lift her back to Seattle. Got to a point that she could not breath so call the 911 and they had a wheel chair at our stateroom within minutes. Once we got to the dispensary, doctors and nurses were rushing around and she had almost stopped breathing because her lungs had pretty much shut down. After some injections of seroids and breathing treatment she started to get her color back but was very weak. So the balance of the cruise she had to go to the dispensary morning and night for breathing treatments. We were able to go into ports but just had to take our time walking. All in all, it didn't mess up our trip that much but was VERY scary. I must say the medical staff was awesome!! From now on, we are taking the insurance. Our medical bill wasn't that much, $600.00 and some change but if we would have had to take her off the ship via airlift, we were looking at between $6,000 - $10,000.

Sorry for the long post. Now we are ready for our cruise in Oct on the Dream.
