Default Onboard Credit

On our last cruise the wife purchased and paid $100.00 for an Onboard Credit that she was told was good for $200.00 when we sailed again.

We were going to use it for the Alaska Cruise that we are taking in July but we cannot use it because we have already paid the balance due. I am looking to use it for our Oct Cruise and after reading the fine print, it is only good for the $200.00 onboard credit if we book 12 days or more. It is only good for the amount of $100.00 since we are only cruising for 7 days. The person that sold it to us did not explain that, he just said, "pay the $100.00 and receive $200.00 in onboard credit the next time we sailed". Figured that was a good deal. If it too good to be true, then most likely it isn't.

It also says in the fine print, that it cannot be used for games of chance or use to pay for gratuities.

Have to spend the money to mail the certificate certified mail.

OBC is OBC..if your grats are on your bill you can apply the OBC. Maybe it wasnt explained that the $200 was for a 12 day cruise but its on the document you received at that time. You should have read it there and then.

You are correct! Most always do but in this case took his word for it. Shame on us!

Two things:

1. You can now redeem the certificate online. No need to mail it as in the past.

2. Perhaps he didn't explain it correctly, but you are getting $200 (or more) in value. They deduct $100 from the cost of the cruise (the reason you couldn't use it on the one that was already paid) AND they give you a $100 OBC for a 7-night cruise. That's $200. It can be even more if used on a longer cruise.

IMHO--You really can't go wrong with a Future Cruise Certificate! Good deal.

That's not really true.

There are two types of OBC. Refundable and non-refundable. Refundable OBC is where someone actually paid money for it. Bon Voyage, travel agent, gift.

Non-refundable is the type of credit that is most often used for promotions and given by the cruise line.

If the non-refundable OBC states that it cannot be used for the casino or gratuities it will not be and you can still end up with non-refundable OBC at the end of the cruise "plus" a balance on your account for gratuities.

It is always a good idea to understand what type of OBC you have.

One last note: If you have both refundable and non-refundable OBC the cruise line will use the refundable credit first and then the non-refundable. They do not want to write a check at the end of the cruise.

Take care,
Mike

It states on the front of the certificate that it will expire and has no value after Jan. 16, 2015.

After reading it again, the $100.00 that we paid is applied to the balance of the cruise and seeing that we are going on the 7 day cruise, we will also receive an additional $100.00 in OBC with a 7-8 day cruise.

It does what it says...100.00 off your cruise cost and if it is a 7d cruise it is like them giving you 100.00 as on board credit. I have used them twice so far..got 50.00 on board credit on the 5d cruise past Jan. I love them. Bought another one on our last cruise to use next time. If you decide you dont want to use them you can get a refund also.

Basically for a 7 day cruise you are prepaying $100 towards a future cruise. Of course the cruise lines bank this and collect interest. Im sure they hope its not redeemed for a couple years but of course they want their guests to return at some point. As a reward you get $100 OBC. I bought one a couple of years ago and although I want to start sailing Royal Carribbean exclusively I felt some obligation to use my certificate just to get the OBC. Im doing the Dream in July and that will most likely end my run of double digit Carnvial cruises.

#1 You CAN use it for cruises paid in full, so that part is wrong. I booked past final payment and paid in full and was given my choice of $100 extra OBC or $100 refunded to my credit card.

#2 the OBC actually can be used for anything including the casino or for tips so that part is Carnival says one thing but does another. Im thinking the reason it says it cannot be used for games of chance is legalese in case you lose in the casino so they have no responsibility.

All OBC can be used for any purchases onboard .. with the except of the FCCs which has to be purcased separately by cc or debit card so they can be refunded.
