Hello all,
I will be cruising on the Destiny on December 26 with my grandson. It just dawned on me, should I let the dining room staff know if we won't be eating in the dining room? Sometimes it's just easier with a 7 year old to go to the buffet.
I'd say, that if it's convenient, and you know you're not going to be there, then by all means, let your waiter know. That might cause less problems for him/her and the others who are being waited on by the same staff. On the other hand, if it's a "spur of the moment" decision to eat somewhere else, I wouldn't stress over it.
Have a GREAT cruise!
Are you signed up for the traditional dinning? If so and you will not be using it, yes, I would let someone know, so they can offer it to someone who wants it...I find most times, people are waitlisted for it and would love to have a table open up.
It is especially helpful if you have tablemates. The server will try to coordinate meals for all diners. If they can avoid waiting on someone they know will not be coming Our last two cruises we had tables with four. Our table mates showed up only one night.

If you are on fixed time dining and have no intention of eating in the MDR, you might let the maitre d' know so perhaps the seats could be reassigned and the servers perhaps pick up extra tips.
You know your grandson better than anyone who may answer your question; does he know about MDR practices?
I ask because we took a cruise with our then 7-year-old grandson and 5-year-old grandaughter, thinking to just eat in the buffet all the time; but both of them really wanted to get dressed up (my grandson insisted on getting a tie) and eating in the "big restaurant". They were delightfully well behaved, even complimented by the people at the next table.
I would let your table mates know if you won't be there on a particular night. Especially if you are getting along well. We didn't show up one night and our sweet table mates were concerned that we were ok.
