Default Honest Review of Valor

Just got back yesterday from cruise.Let me say that we are not new to cruising. We have been on 15 cruises RCCL, Celebrity, Princess. We wanted to try Carnival even though everyone said no. The Valor was dirty and the service was terrible. Our cabin steward came aroung maybe once in the morning if we were lucky. He actually missed one day totally. The next day we saw him before we went on our excursion and when we came back at 3pm our room still wasn't made up. You would think after missing the day before he would try and make this up. The food was marginal at best.We even went to Scarletts steak house and this was a disaster. My steak was well done even asking them for medium, my wifes chilean sea bass was raw and we had to send it back it was not even cooked. The chef did come out and apolize to us and gave my wife a steak which was good.We waited about 10 minutes for them to take our dishes and asked for coffee. They finally came with coffee and no cream. When I asked if we could get some cream the waiter asked if we were in a hurry. The desert was cheesecake and we had about 4 people say that one piece was plenty for 2 people. We ordered one piece and they only came with one fork and we could not get anyone to bring another fork. The worst part of the whole cruise was that the casino and the promedade deck smelled so bad from smoke it was unbearable. My wife said it best when she said the shipped needed up datting it looked tired. The worst part was the people who didn't seem like they cared or wanted to help with anything. I really think the problem is training and tipping automatically on your bill. There is no incentive to do a good job or go out of their way to help. We heard this over and over again. The decks on the 3rd floor were never cleaned at night.I saw glasses and beer bottles in the same place for 2 days straight. Finally we signed up for express luggage which we always use and after paying for transportation we had to pay again because the buses said this wasn't covered even though we showed them our bill which they really didn't care about. At least our luggage didn't get lost. This is the first and last time I will ever use Carnival. This was by far the worst cruise we ever went on. dirty ship and terrible service.Smell of smoke was unbelievable in the casino and Promenade deck area.

Wow... tough review, but I am sure it was honest. Did you speak with Guest Relations regarding your dissatisfaction with the stateroom attendant ?

While CCL is "Considered a VALUE"...... I question how much some passengers are willing to give up for that perceived "VALUE"....... You pay for what you get and CCL still captures the attention with their lower fares, but in reality, are they providing the service YOU expect or capturing the type of passenger YOU want to sail with ? For me..... No thanks !

I am sorry that you were so disappointed with your cruise. Sadly, once in a while, you get a bad one. We have had "bad" cruises on HAL, Princess, RCCL, and Carnival, but have also had really great cruises on them, too. I will admit that our last cruise was on the Carnival Legend and it was sub-par. We have sailed the Legend a lot and it was sad to have our favorite ship show so many signs of poor maintenance.
Hope your next cruise, on whatever line, is a great one!

Yes we stopped by the guest relations and they relly didn't seem to care. After our complaint at 9pm someone at least came with clean towels for the next day. I don't want to sound so negative but the only positive thing we can say is the ice cream was better than on RCCL and also they gave out free popcorn. We also liked there salads at the buffet but the eggs at the buffet were artifical. Another negative was that they allow smoking right next to the pools which I couldn't believe. We did like the anytime dinning but the food was not very good at all. Thanks Jimbo

I'm am sorry that your cruise was so bad.

I have to say that parts of your review sounded like they were from our one Royal Caribbean cruise and other parts from our one NCL cruise.

Like others have stated all cruise lines can be a hit or miss. No to sure how old Valor is but maybe try a newer ship if you do cruise carnival again. RC was our bad cruise and it kind of spoiled sailing RCL for us; however I would try a newer RCL ship in the future.

I would have marched myself right down to costumer relations and had the tip removed from my bill.

The only tip I am sorry I gave was the one at Scarlettes steak house. I really didn't want to be to critical because I don't want everyone to think we are just picking on Carnival. I to have had so so cruises with other cruise lines but nothing like this.Like I said the trainning of the crew had alot to do with our disapointment.I think the reason for the bad service has to do with automatic tipping. No one really seemed concerned. In all fairness it is not the crews job or responsibility to tell people where they can smoke. How can Carnival allow smoking on the same level as the pool that young kids swim in. There is a whole section that allows smoking next to the pools.Even in the adults only pool area where they say no smoking allowed people were smoking freely and none of the crew said a thing. Just bad management on Carnivals part. They need someone to addresse these issues because Carnival doesn't seem to care. Jimbo

RCL and Carnival now have almost identical smoking rules. RCL allows smoking outside on starboard side of the pool. Most people think smoking outside is ok. I have noticed fewer smokers outside on both lines early in the morning. I used to go sit with them with a cup of coffee and chat, because I know the smokers will be hanging out up by the pool .. not so much anymore to me.

I think you need a all nonsmoking line. .. maybe one day there will be another. Carnival tired it once with Paradise .. before its time. Not everyone cares if others smoke.

I too have had a really awful cabin steward once on Conquest, full of excuses, one pillow, wouldnt get a 2nd which is standard, 4 hangers total for 2 women, didnt do turn down 3 nights and clean one morning etc.. I do think I should have removed some of his tips, but I got the idea I couldnt just remove one person's tips without hurting others who were not to blame.

But then this happened to me on RCL Voyager as well. Turned out it was this girls 2nd week on the job and she was seasick and thats why she wasnt doing her job. So you never know for sure the underlying reasons.

I do auto tips on both lines. I too have run into slackers .. but I decided I was on vacation and didnt want it to affect my vacation .. so I just let it go. It wasnt important enough to me to fuss about. Maybe thats how slackers get by with it for so long, people like me letting stuff go. thanks for your honest review.

Didnít your cabin steward neglect your cabin? It seems like your biggest complaint was smoking. For me if my cabin attendant rarely came to the room and we had no clean towels and unmade beds that would be a big problem. Iím not a smoker and have never been bothered by smoke on a ship unless it was inside and I wouldnít hang around an inside smoking area, I do limit my time in the casino.

The funny thing about this is I am a Cigar smoker and the smoke bothered me.Smoking is not my biggest complaint. The overall service and food quality is what I can't believe. I too didn't complain about the tip because I didnt want to hurt the other people who at least rried to do a ggod job even though they didn'r trainning again is the problem I blame Carnival not the employees for this.It starts at the top Jimbo

The cabin service you describe is unacceptable. The only reason for you cabin to not get cleaned is if you never leave you cabin. Usually there are two windows in which cabins are serviced and it doesn't sound like you were keeping the steward away.

I did feel our last cruise (Freedom) that stateroom service had dropped off. Maybe we got a not so good steward, maybe staffing has decreased so stewards are servicing more cabins or maybe it is training.

So much can depend on the higher-ups on the ship. The captain has a lot of influence on the general atmosphere and the other officers and department managers also affect what goes on.
I was on one cruise where the service was unbelievably bad. Our cabin steward NEVER showed up at all, in spite of repeated trips to the Pursers Desk. The food service was so slow that everything was cold, etc.,etc. This was before auto tipping, too. Eventually found out that the ship had been scheduled for a long stretch in drydock, so almost all of the crew had bought tickets back home. The, the cruise line told them, at the very last minute, that they couldn't go because drydock had been delayed. They all lost the money they had spent on airline tickets. Very unhappy crew. But, if I hadn't chatted with one of them, I would have just thought it was a really bad cruise.

I've experienced the odd "bad cruise" on all of the mass market lines (the current "wording" the industry uses to describe them in now "contemporary). I've had less the odd less than stellar cruise on Carnival, RCI, and NCL... which are ALL in the same classification; mass market/contemporary. But I've also had excellent cruise experiences on each of those lines.

If I'd taken each less than stellar experience as the definition of what that cruise line's normal standard is, I'd have not returned to any of them.

I've also had the odd bad experience on the Premium lines (Princess, Holland America, Celebrity).

However, the less than stellar experiences are far exceeded by the great cruises I've enjoyed on all these lines. Everyone should cruise the lines that offers what satisfies them. However, I wouldn't recommend ignoring another possible cruise on a line because of a single experience.

Not to say I'm right (I'm only right for me) but I personally choose Carnival over RCI. Though at this time, my favorite mass market line is NCL.

I just have to comment on the title of the thread. I assume EVERY review posted is an HONEST review, expressing that writers opinions and descriptions of their cruise experience.

As others have said... even people on the exact same cruise can have totally different views and judgements because they had different staff, or different expectations, or just enjoy or are dissatisfied with different things. Neither person is wrong or dishonest expressing their opinions.

I'll take issue with those who weren't on that cruise who would question or support the opinions of those who were just to support their own biases.

I was on the same cruise and had a totally different experience. I had stellar service in the dining room and had a fantastic room steward. Both got "extra" tips from us. Never saw the ship dirty or anything. Just goes to show that people on the same cruise can have vastly different outcomes. I will definately do this ship and itinerary in the future.

I had one of those odd sailings on Royal where the cabin service was so bad the steward didn't bother to show up on the last day when he would have left our cruise evaluation form (theoretically). I have a feeling he didn't last too long. Luckily it was a short cruise.
