Are these now free, or do they still charge to use internet to access email? If a person has a smart phone, can they access there email for free? I understand I am on vacation but our child will be with Grandparents so we'll be wanting to check in.
They offer internet packages, or, you can pay by the minute. Service can be in and out sometimes, and then minutes just go tick tock..bye bye. Not sure about Iphones, sorry.

You can buy packages of time/access and log on from where ever you are on the ship but keep in mind the issues you can run into with a cellphone outside the US.
The cafe is good for the end of the cruise when you can check in with your airline 24 hrs before your flight home and get boarding passes
You really want to turn OFF your voice roaming and data roaming. Turn on the wifi only when you are actually using the ships access. Otherwise keep the wifi OFF or turn the whole phone off/on airplane.
Do not text pictures while away. Paul Motter on here learned the hard lesson on that.
When you are along side the pier in port you may be able to get a free wifi signal but be careful about using the cellular signal. You can rack up a really big bill if you leave the phone on at times.
Turn off any programs/apps that use location or auto update.
Check with your carrrier about plans that you may be able to switch to during the month you are traveling and have international calling on.

20 years ago we had Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Steve Jobs. Now we have no Cash, no Hope and no Jobs. Please don't let Kevin Bacon die.
You might want to try bring a phone card and using a public telephone .
Phone cards dont work They only might be good FROM the U.S. not to the U.S. I use the internet cafes in the ports and you can buy time by the minute usually around 35 cents a minute. Better than buying a different card in each port.
I had bought a CVS? International card and it would not even work from the pay phone in Key West. Blocked!!! I knew there was a extra fee from a pay phone but was willing to pay it. Drat.
I get some free time dependant on the cruise line I book, with Princess I think it was 300 mins, you can buy packages however use the ships PC's they are faster than your lap top as you are not trying to update all your back ground programs. In the EU you will find hotspots in most MacDonalds so save your laptop or blackberry for when you are ashore
