How much is a good amount to save up for?

I'm not a drinker. (I might do a little just because I have really never had a reason to do it.) So without drinking heavy, and going to the Casino how much would you spend on a cruise? I'm trying to save up much as I can. Would like a good goal. :)

Cruises vary in price depending on where you cruise, how long, do you have to fly into a destination port? Also the time of year you want to go is always priced different...

That is a hard question but a very common one. Everyone's spending habits are different. Some people like to take a lot of ship's shore excursions, buy souvenirs, have a cocktails or enjoy the spa.

My "rule of thumb" is to allow yourself $100/day and you should be able to have a pretty good time. You may spend less than that, or you may spend more, but it is a good base point and most people usually don't go over that.

Take care,
Mike

I'm not a big drinker or gambler so just for my sign & sail card on a six night cruise including the auto tip it was $149.00. It was in port where I spent more and allotted $100.00 per day and that went toward scooter rental or an excursion as well as food. Itís better to be safe and have a little extra if you can.

Thanks all for the answers. I have one more question for you!

Is the fantasy ships fun to be on? I heard it is very old, but it's the only ship that is in Charleston and it's the only option we have. I'm worried a little about the quality of fun we would have cause of the ship age and size.

Moiraine February 25th, 2012 11:27 AM

Well, I've never been on the Fantasy...but I would enjoy the cruise myself. It depends on what you want to do on your cruise. The ship will have shows, pools, food, and all of the basic things you get on a cruise. It might not have the latest bells and whistles but it should be lots of fun.

As for money, if you are not going to drink more than one or two drinks and leave off the casino, you might not need loads of money. I usually look at the shore excursions I want to take and book/pay for them beforehand, which frees up money that I have when I board the ship.

I wrote an article about this topic a few weeks back. Reading it may help give you some idea....

That's about all we do spend money on!! Excursions are dependent on destination, speciality restaurants maybe?

well 100.00 is a good average a day but it varies on activities.so here is something that might help.

A drink with an umbrella in it averages 8.oo each

A beer about 6.00

A game of bingo per card is 20.00 usually a few times a cruise they have this.

A coke is about 4.00 a piece if i remember correctly. So purchase a coke card for around 40.00 if you drink them alot. Save money buy 1 just for you and get up and get your spouse a drink at the bar by using your card. You can only get one beverage at a time. The card is not scanned so there isnt a record of usage.

Play the tournament black jack for 20.00 and a chance to win 500.00
or a slot tournament for 20.00.
This is how we gamble and save money and play.

Currently, a Coke on Carnival is $2.00. Purchasing the soda card is a good idea if you drink more than 3 sodas a day.

Mike

The $100/day rule is a very good way to set a goal. And, to answer your second question, the Fantasy is a great ship.
However, it has been my experience that the amount of fun I've had on my six cruises (twice on the Fantasy) had nothing to do with the ship or the amount of money I spent. Cruise fun is what you make for yourself by meeting people, getting involved with activities or just relaxing and people watching or just doing what you like to do. The Fantasy isn't the newest ship in the fleet, but for the days you are on it, it can be the funnest!!

ps...it's always a good feeling to come home with enough money left over to start planning your next cruise!!

I brought $700 on my last cruise (12 days) .I brought home 2/3 of it.

There are many cruise that high expenses. It should be your decision of what are you planning to ride on. If you spend a lot amount in cruise that is better. It is good to ride on expensive cruise than to low-grade cruise it made you suffer.

Buy 100 shares of stock, get OBC to spend onboard. Buy a FCC once onboard for your next cruise, for more free OBC to spend onboard.

I am already at $200 for my solo 7 day cruises before I have to pay anything. My tips are paid for and at least one excursion, depending on how long the cruise is. The above are combinable. For a 5 day, I would have $100 to spend.

I don't really spend much over that, as I already have bought so much they sell in the stores and get a lot of free drinks, (especially on RCL), but Carnival has two events with free drinks right off the bat.

Other than tips, you can spend nothing, or a lot. Tips are the only mandatory spending I feel.

Just to break down the cost of the soda card, its $4.50 per day for children, and $6 per day for adults. Plus 15% tips automatically added when you buy it. Some feel that they don't get as good of service with the card, its up to you. Also, as far as "sharing" if you feel ok about sneaking someone else soda's on the card meant for one person.

The black jack and slot tournaments are a nice platinum perk right now (one free entry). I came "this close" last time to winning and got passed in the finals the last few seconds and came in 2nd. Just missed the $500. I have been in the finals only twice so far.

I feel perfectly fine with sharing or sneaking a 40.00 coke card. Especially when Carnival feels perfectly fine with some of their cut backs they have made. But to each his own.
