Last month I had the pleasure of sailing on the Carnival Liberty. Earlier this fall Liberty went into drydock and was upgraded to the new Fun Ship 2.0. This included the addition of: "Guys Burger Bar, The Blue Iguana Cantina, The Blue Iguana Tequila Bar, Red Frog Rum Bar, The George Lopez Comedy Club, The Alchemy Bar, EA Sports Bar and a new DJ format.
I had sailed on Liberty in June of 2011. This was just before the upgrades so I had a good idea of what had changed.
My overall take on the Fun Ship 2.0 upgrades was that it is definitely an improvement. The Guy's burgers were superior to the previous burgers but most of the superiority came from the available toppings such as: Mushroom, fried onions, pickles, lettuce, numerous sauces and an upgraded look to the area. The burgers were good but didn't quite live up to the hype. As with all mass produced hamburgers you are still getting a twice cooked burger but the meat seems to be a bit better than what they served before the upgrade. I had to eat "Naked Guys"

with no bun because of a gluten intolerance that I have developed but they were still good. The best thing has to be the new fries. They are rough cut fries and are very tasty.
The Blue Iguana Cantina was OK but not great. Everyone in our group wished that they could get something hot from there. Everything was luke warm but tasted OK. It isn't Chipotle quality but it was better than Taco Bell.
The bars were a big disappointment. They are basically just bars with different decor. The Red Frog and Blue Iguana were new pool side bars that had an updated decor and some different drinks available. The Alchemy bar reminded me of an attempt to copy the Ice Bars and other martini bars that have popped up on the ship. I had one drink there and it's location near the piano bar and comedy club and open atmosphere didn't really give you the feeling you were in a "special" place. The drinks were good and diverse but nothing really special other than the "chemistry" theme.
The comedy club definitely had better acts and enjoyed most of them. I have to say that one comedian's late night show was even too raunchy for me. If you know me you would know that it's pretty raunchy for me to say that.
The new DJ's in the club and on deck definitely have updated their play lists to a more contemporary genre of music but the amount of rap, reggae and the sheer acoustic volume was a bit much for me. Many times you could not carry on a conversation on the Lido deck because of the volume of the music. The night clubs seemed more crowded than my previous cruise and more people on the dance floors. This was also and early Spring Break cruise so it was a younger demographic.
I did not experience the EA Sports bar so I can't comment on that. The new Library Bar was just that. I bar in the library and it was not staffed each time I stopped by. The self-serve wine dispensers were a nice touch. You just swipe your card and it will automatically pour you a small glass of wine.
There are more changes underway such as: The Hasbro Game Shows, New Production shows and some other things.
I did find it new and interesting but it was not really that different from my previous cruise. It's better but not what I would consider a full version upgrade.
So let's hear it for Fun Ship 1.5.

Take care,
Mike
