Default Reprinting Photos

Does anyone know if you can make reprints of the photos taken on board that were purchased? If so, do you need special permission? I thought I had seen something posted on this before but can't seem to find it. Hoping some of you veteran cruisers can help me with this.

I can still remember on my very first cruise, the group of 12 that I was with decided to buy one group phote onboard and get copies made for each couple. We had gone to a local drug store, that had a photo shop, and they refused to reprint it for us. They claimed it was a copyright infringement and the girl stood her ground!
Good luck and I have no idea if things have changed since then (2003)

Almost any place will tell you the same thing. I have found that a good photo scanner/printer is a great investment! My 3 in 1 has done awesome at making me copies of all my cruise photos to share with family. The bigger the origional the better though, and you can really only print the same or smaller for good quality.

Another good trick is to take a photo of your photo with a good digital camera after your home. I have done that once or twice to post them on facebook, and they turn out pretty good as well.

If there is a copyright on the photo a photo store will not make copies. I believe it is one of the reasons that the onboard photo departments are losing business. It's better to sell one photo rather than none.

A good scanner will produce a high quality picture.

Take care,
Mike

I found that my local photo shop copied they for me .
I feel that the cruise line doesn't own the copyright once you bought the photos.
They are yours to do as you please . This is the same as wedding photos , you pay the photographer to supply a product (pictures) they are yours to do as you please.
My photo said only "Supplied by XXX Cruise Line" . It was stamped on the back
not on the front .

Default Release form

I checked out a few sites. Many of them report that (since you paid for the picture and it is your property) Carnival has lately been giving a "release form. Here is one of them, just click on the link, read the paragraph about the form, and click on "PHOTO RELEASE". You can then print out the form.

I saw that once from Carnival ... and unless you have something like that from anyone that took the picture ... the picture taker is still the copyright owner. In the reference above about wedding photos, you only get reprint rights if the photographer agrees to it.

I occasionally do freelance photography at some of the Orlando night clubs and put my "Photos by Hawkeye" logo on them, and the times I've wanted prints of something that looked good (Before I had a decent photo printer) I had to sign paperwork stating I was the copy right holder, and show proof (My business card usually sufficed).

In this day and age with home printers being as good as they are (same with scanners) it does make it harder and hard to enforce a copyright. I know for wedding photogs, paper prints tend to be their only real profit when it's all said and done. The amount of labor that is on the back end can be insane ... post processing and what not. One of the reasons I never really got involved in that business.

I agree with HawkeyeFLA and with that said... Would they not make as much money selling a digital version of all your photos for a flat rate? I would be more than willing to pay for a disk or flash drive to take home and print, even if the price was a litle high. Much more practicle to me.

You can go to Walgreen and scan the picture and have it printed. I have never had a problem, itís a self serve set up except the picture will come from the camera person from behind the counter. The touch screen will warn about copyright permission but nobody Iíve come across seems to care. Itís all on your own word.

I have the photo consent and have never had any issues having copies made from any of the photo stores. I have also just scanned and printed at home and if you have a good printer the picture will look just as good as the original.

Not the same thing but similiar . I brought a book to a Staples store a few years ago and requested copies .I was told that since there was a copywright on the book they could not make copies . Presumably its the same thing with the ships photo.

The copyright belongs to the photographer, period. Permission has to be granted for someone to reprint the photo. I have been able to obtain permission from Carnival contact their offices. As aerogirl stated, when you copy one at a self serve counter you are informed of copyright infringement and electronicaly sign a waiver. No one seems to care. If they did you could be sued in court, and lose. Will Carnival chase one individual for this, probably not unless you make numerous copies and try to gain financally form it.
