We sailed on the Breeze Inaugural cruise and were surprised by the motion of the ship.
When at around 20 knots, the Carnival Breeze would at times jerk side to side, more than once per second. It would happen in waves of about four to six jerks. It was most noticeable when in bed, feeling like someone is shaking the bed. Needless to say, this lead to some abrupt awakenings.
The ship would be running smoothly, then it would start. The best we could tell is that it was reacting to waves, since it didn't happen when the seas were calm.
We have sailed on many ships, and of course the ships react to the motion of the ocean, but the four of us don't remember ever encountering a side to side jerking motion before.
This has happened to us many times, usually in high seas, usually on the smaller ships. I think it is the action of the ship coming down from a wave peak while being held in steady position by the stabilizers. This is my opinion, and if you ask my wife, I am usually wrong.

Mike, are you referring to the one rocky day going to Livorno? The motion also depends on where your cabin is located. We were on Main close to the theatre and had some rocking, but not that bad and it did not wake us up?

I was going to comment but would probably get banned...
I believe that I was having the same thoughts as you.

I don't remember the specific days. I keep some notes but they were just speed related. It happened a few times. It did seem fine when the seas were very calm but it didn't seem to be very rough most of the times it happened. The last night sailing to Barcelona at 23 knots it didn't do it. We were midship on deck eight.
Of course a ship will pitch and roll. I wouldn't describe the effect as "rocking". It would shake you for a few seconds or so, stop for a bit, then shake you again. We just don't remember ever being "shaken" in bed before. Most of us were waken by it.
(We've crossed the Atlantic twice, sailed to Bermuda, from Hawaii to Fanning Island, and in the North and Baltic Seas.)
We have not sailed the Breeze yet, but the Dream was the same way.
As Jacqueline has pointed out, it did indeed depend on where your cabin was as to how much someone would notice it.
But if you were in the Main Theater when it happened...it felt like the ship had hit something....and a couple of times, Todd (or other Entertainment staff) would mention it when they were on stage....because it was just to severe to ignore.
We did not notice on the Magic at all that I can remember.....
We remember it on the Dream because we also had an interior Spa Cabin and would get a GONG sound along with it....that lasted for 18 hours....but out of a 9 day cruise, that is not a lot of time.....

Don't let the smart alecks get you down (and you didn't - so good for you).
I have experienced ships shaking side to side and you are right that it is unusual. I usually feel it at the front of the ship and it usually happens after pitching.
Captains typically steer a ship partially into the waves in high seas (they don't want them hitting broadside), but with a bias to the left or right depending on the direction the need to take the ship. The bow of the ship goes up the wave and then "crashes" down. When it lands the water beneath it has moved and is continuing to move to a usually one side, meanwhile the ship is set to steer a contrary direction - so the ship goes through a fast realignment as soon as it hits the water - that is the sideways shaking motion.
The more a ship is pitching (the higher the waves) the more you feel the shaking because the front of the ship is suspended in air longer before it comes down - meaning the water below has changed its height more so it will "realign" more.

The first ship I noticed this on was the Splendor.
It pitched more than I was used to without significant wave action to cause it.
We will find out first hand about the Breeze in November!!

I noticed that on the Magic on the Trans Atlantic Crossing. I think these ships that have many decks really shake rattle and roll when hit by a wave while at cruising speed. Also these ships are designed for the Caribbean and not Ocean Going Travel. I guess the Med can get pretty rough huh?
