Formal Night Question

Hi,
Lookig for some advice please. We are going on our first cruise next week. My boyfriend is happy wearing shorts and a t shirt or his kilt but not a suit and tie. How formal are the formal nights on carnival dream? Would his kilt outfit be too over dressed or would that be ok? He can't decide whether to take the suit and tie or kilt so your help would be mug appreciated!! Thank you

slacks and a dress shirt is all that's required for Elegant night.

Carnival doesn't call it formal night anymore.
