Carnival Valor or RCL Jewel?

Hi,

My girlfriend and I were trying to decide between a 7 night 2013 South Caribbean cruise out of Puerto Rico with the Carnival Valor and RCL Jewel of the Seas.

Both itineraries were quite similar with minor differences. Carnival has the lowest prices and RCL Jewel has received better reviews.

We have never sailed with either line before so it's difficult to put the reviews and costs into context.

As novice cruisers we are a bit concerned about cabin space. We will be traveling with two suitcases and wanted some room to move around the cabin. Carnivals rooms did not look very spacious.

Has anyone cruised on either ship before? What cruiseline offers better value? Does Carnival or RCL offer better entertainment, activities or excursions?

Thanks,
Arvin

Hi Arvin,

I sailed on Carnival Valor in 2009 and loved it. It is my 2nd favorite Carnival ship.If you are looking for cabin space, the Carnival Valor would be your choice. The rooms on Royal are small. I have only sailed on Royal once ( I just came off the Allure of the Seas on Oct 14, 2012). The room and bathroom are small. I did not enjoy the food in the dining room. If you like seafood, there is a restaurant upstairs in the Lido deck restaurant on the Valor. The food is awesome. The choices in the dining room are better and of course the price is better on Carnival. You will not be dissapointed with this ship.

Hi Arvin,
Cruise ship cabins have quite a bit of storage. There are floor to ceiling closets. We always unpack and tuck the suitcases under the beds.

I would go with Carnival Valor myself. Reviews don't hold much water with me.

I have sailed on the Jewel twice. It is a great ship. As an advid cruiser to a novice I would definitely suggest Royal over Carnival. You get what you pay for.

I think Carnival would be the perfect 1st cruise. My second cruise was on Royal Caribbean and I was so disappointed with the whole thing. When I do RC again it will be on Oasis or Allure but not an older ship. Start with one than do another with a different cruise line to see what meets your needs the best. Paying more doesn’t mean a better cruise. Also Carnival's cabins are the biggest of the cruise lines. What ever ship you choose I'm sure you will have a great time.

This is a hard choice.

Valor:
Larger cabins
Less cost
Tacky decor
Probably a bit more lively.
Probably better overall food.

Jewel of the Seas:

BEAUTIFUL ship and decor.
smaller standard cabins (but more than enough for two)
Food is fine.

I have to say that the Jewel class of ships are some of my favorites. They have a great layout and beautiful decor with a lot windows and open space. You always know you're at sea.

For me: Even though I enjoy Carnival's food more, I would go with Jewel OTS. I just love those ships. If you can swing a mini-suite or suite you will REALLY love it.

Take care,
Mike

I agree with what Mike says.

Take the cost of the OS and divide that by 7 days and it's not that much more per day. ;)

We have done the large ships and some of the smaller ones thinking the bigger ships would have larger stateroom but they were exactly the same. The larger ships just have more staterooms and MORE people.

Sure you will enjoy your cruise. When you come back, you will book another one. :D

I agree with Mike. My preference would also be the Jewel. We love the Radiance-class ships.

And food is always very subject. One person loves Burger King, another loves McDonalds, while others hate both, and some like both.

With that said, I think the food on RCCL is a bit better - although not much and has declined over the last 10 years - mainly due to the economy and cut backs. But I feel they do have more choices.

One thing you might want to consider are the amenities. What does each ship have to offer and how do they fit into your lifestyle? You may find one ship has more of what you're looking for than the other.

But for a first cruise, I don't think you can go wrong with either one. And as aerogirl said, try one this time, then try a different one next time. That's half the fun of cruising is trying to find the one that fits you best, keeping in mind that what one person loves, another will hate. So take reviews with a grain of salt. You may find the one that gets the least amount of positive views the best one for you. Go with a positive attitude, have fun, and don't let the little things that can go wrong take away from your overall enjoyment.

You really can't go wrong with any Radicance class ship, they are just beautiful and their layout is wonderful. Do both ships visit the same ports and number of ports. I notice that sometimes, you get an extra port when sailing Royal Caribbean, that also makes the price more?? Do, let us know what ship you book...

I too have sailed Jewel twice and had been told its the most beautiful ship some have ever sailed on. I was in a Junior Suite.. so of course thought the cabins were huge.. and very nice. I also did a solo cruise by myself in a OV and thought it was great.. but by myself, I had plenty of space for just me.

Loved the glass elevators.. the self leveling pool tables were pretty funny moving the last day in the waves by themselves.

Nothing against Valor.. but I would love to do 7 days on Jewel. Its a really special ship. I love any cruise though, so you cant go wrong.. but Jewel to me is special.

Thank you all for your advice! I first booked the cruise with RCL but a lot of what you all said about Carnival stuck with me. So later in the week I chose to
cancel and booked an AFT Balcony with Carnival.

After reading everyone's comments about Carnival I choose to gave them a shot. It helps that I found an AFT balcony for much less than I had paid with RCL for a balcony. Overall the value with Carnival was hard to beat.

Regards,
Arvin

I think you made the right choice. If the prices had been equal I would have opted for the RCL - (solely because it is a smaller and less crowded newer ship) but in fact the difference is minimal and you will have a great cruise either way - so good for you.

And especially good for you for not buying into the hype of scaring people away from Carnival right now.

Just got off the Valor yesterday. I'm working on my review, but you'll have a great time on that itinerary.

Several friends had aft balconies too...they are fantastic.

Carnival Valor. My favorite of all. The price is better, the service is better. Food is better on RCI, and the shows are too. I like both lines, but Carnival is my favorite.
