First time,Nervous but excited. feb 7 2013
We are going on our first cruise on Feb 7 to Freeport & Nassau then back to Jaxport. 4 day cruise. The closer it gets the more nervous I am. We will be on the lowest deck (riviera) with an ocean view. We wanted a balcony but they didn't have one available at the time. Is anyone else here going on the same cruise? I have done alot of research but still wondering about how much cash to have on hand for certain things and we dont plan on drinking much alcohol so whats a usual roundabout bill? We paid a lil over 800 just for the cruise. Any advice is welcome..

We normally start with $300 on our on board account. Will carry another $150 each in our pockets. Other then at the casino you won't be using cash on board. Granted most times we end up going to the on board ATM 2 or 3 times for more cash, but it helps us keep sending down. Our first we firgured on $1500 for on board spending, came home with so many pics it took over 2 hours to show them all to anyone..

Keep in mind, that any purchases you make while on the ship will go on your sign/sail card and then get charged to your credit card, so you will not need much cash. Are you doing any shore excursions?? If tips are not pre-paid, that will be 10-12 dollars per day, per person. How about gambling while on board??

Enjoy your first cruise, and congrats on the wedding.

I bring extra cash for a emergency. I have purchased jewelry for cash, $350 for a ring is the most in a port, but I no longer do this as I found you can buy jewelry cheaper online at places like

I would not go crazy with buying stuff in the ports. Nassau does have a nice staw market. I have bought junk jewelry there that fell apart later .. it wasnt that cheap, hand made.

I now stick to carved wooden things, or things that I know will not fall apart and that later on I will enjoy looking at. For instance I have a carved wooden frog bank I got there. I also paid $35 for a nice leather purse that now exactly fits my tablet.

Tips are $11.75 per person per day but will be charged to whatever credit card you put up.

Other than what I buy in the ports .. perhaps a taxi ride to town for instance, thats all I buy in cash.

I put at least $50 mostly in ones, a few fives and a ten in a envelope and take half into each of the two ports. You will want to barter and they dont always have change. Tips to shuttle drivers, at the airport, baggage handlers, that sort of thing. I find I always run into people I need to tip a few bucks each.

You'll be getting a card from the cruiseline to cover purchases/incidentals. At end of cruise, you'll be paying that ... You can pay that by credit card or cash. So, it depends on what you think you'll spend - shore excursions, gambling, drinks, knick-knacks, etc
