Default EXTRA! Carnival Triumph Fire!!

EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA!

GALVESTON -- A fire on a cruise ship has caused the vessel to operate on emergency generator power.
Officials say the ship Carnival Triumph experienced an engine room fire Sunday morning while the vessel was sailing approximately 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
There are 3,143 guests and 1,086 crew members on board the four-day cruise that departed Galveston, Texas on Thursday.
The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was contained to the aft engine room, according to Carnival.
The firefighting squads on board are monitoring the situation. Officials said no injuries have been reported.
Carnival Triumph is currently without propulsion and the ship is operating on emergency generator power. The U.S. Coast Guard and other authorities have been notified.
All guests have been asked to remain in the ship’s public areas and open decks.
Carnival says it is in the process of contacting the designated emergency contacts for all guests on board. Concerned family and loved ones of guests and crew may call 1-888-290-5095 or 1-305-406-5534.

Default Carnival Triumph Adrift: Engine Room Fire

Carnival Triumph is had an engine room fire and is now adrift off the Yucatan Peninsula. Here is the current statement from Carnival:

February 10, 2013 – 3.30p EST

This morning the cruise ship Carnival Triumph experienced an engine room fire while the vessel was sailing approximately 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was contained to the aft engine room. At this time, the fire is fully extinguished. No casualties or injuries to guests or crew have been reported.

The vessel is currently without propulsion and the ship is operating on emergency generator power. The ship's technical crew is continuing to assess the damage and attempting to restore power. In the meantime, a tugboat is being dispatched to the ship's location in the event it is needed. All appropriate authorities including U.S. Coast Guard have been notified

There are 3,143 guests and 1,086 crew on board and all guests have been asked to remain in the ship’s public areas and open decks for their comfort. Guests are being provided with food and refreshments. All guests on the current voyage will receive a full refund inclusive of gratuities and any transportation expenses.

Carnival Triumph is currently on a four-day cruise that departed Galveston, Texas on Thursday. Carnival has contacted guests booked on the next voyage which was scheduled to depart tomorrow to make them aware of the situation and advise that tomorrow’s voyage will not depart as scheduled. Guests have the option of cancelling now and receiving a full refund or waiting for further information to determine if a shortened, partial voyage may be possible. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.

I wish all the passengers and crew a quick resolution to this problem.

Take care,
Mike

Triumph has had a few propulsion issues in the last couple of months. I'm glad Carnival is refunding the fares and gratuities. I just hope that power to the interior systems can be restored. Not being able to cook or flush toilets would make it a "Splendor" type of situation.

I wonder if the Coast Guard is dispatching SPAM. OK: Bad joke but couldn't resist.

My best thoughts to all on board.

Take care,
Mike

The ship has toilets, they likely just don't work

At least they are safe, nervous, but safe.

Families of the Thomson crew members are mourning over their losses.

Another missed opportunity. We were on the Splendor 2 weeks before that free cruise. . . . .

I was thinking there might be some bargains on this ship SOON. If I were not on Conquest in about a week, this would be a good bargain. I bet some people are cancelling.

Next two cruises have been canceled. The Triumph is going to be taken under tug power to Progreso, Mexico, and will arrive on Wednesday. Three 'not-so-fun' days at sea it appears. Elation is alongside currently, providing additional supplies.

Yes indeed! The ship is always the safest place, even if conditions are not optimal. I'm sure the crew is doing their usual great job under trying conditions.

Wait until the 2,000 or so passengers who do not have passports try to fly back to the USA.
No passport = no flight.

It's about a three day bus ride from the Yucatan back to the US Border.

The Triumph fire made CNBC this morning who said the costa wreck didnt even ding the stock price really (its gone up considerably since then), so they expect no effect from this really.

This is getting so common place that stock holders dont even care.

I allways tell my friends to get a passport. For people like me who are Naturalized Citizens, it's the easiest way to prove that you are a US citizen.

They'll let them fly, especially if it is on chartered flights which is what I assume will happen. I'd like to think Carnival knows who doesn't have a passport and has notified the authorities of the unusual situation and received permission.

However those without passports will get special screening. I think they make them hop on one foot while singing the national anthem and then ask who won the World Series last year.

But the bottom line is those cruisers who continue to refuse getting a passport are being hardheaded.

They have restored some power on the ship. Some of the forward toilets are working but the aft toilets are still out of commission. Here is Carnival's current statement. Elation and Legend will be offloading some provisions to the Triumph later today.

The ship has maintained emergency generator power since the fire occurred and the technical team on board has been successful in gradually restoring auxiliary power to operate some basic hotel functions. Currently, public and cabin toilets are operational in certain sections of the ship, power has been restored to a limited number of elevators, and some power in the Lido dining area is providing for hot coffee and limited hot food service. Guests have been supplied with food and refreshments throughout yesterday and this morning and the ship has supplies on board to last until the vessel returns to port.

Yesterday afternoon, the Carnival Elation rendezvoused with the Carnival Triumph and supplied dinners for the guests on Carnival Triumph, along with additional provisions. Early this afternoon, the Carnival Legend will also be on site to do the same.

Take care,
Mike

Cool Triumph Propulsion Issues

I was just on the Triumph 8 weeks ago so I got lucky and missed this...Although we DID have propulsion issues and were delayed by a day returning to port and got an extra day at sea with no repercussions to passengers whatsoever. We just got a free day!! Triumph gave $200 each (in airfare expense) to those who missed flights as a result of the delay. I drove so was not affected by any missed flights.

The propulsion issue for us was announced when we ported in Cozumel. We got an extra 4 hours of port time in Cozumel as Carnival flew in a team of engineers/mechanics to work on the problem. These men continued to work on the issue as we very slowly departed (late) from the Cozumel port. The issue was finally "resolved" and we picked up speed making it back to Galveston..albeit late afternoon instead of early morning. Apparently, the issue was only temporarily corrected as we can see from today's incident..

At least they are in a warm climate. Without full power things would get pretty cold in Northern latitudes.

Default Triumph is headed to Mobile now

CARNIVAL TRIUMPH
STATEMENT FROM GERRY CAHILL, PRESIDENT & CEO, CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES

... February 12, 2013, 8:30pm ET

The Carnival Triumph, while on a four-day cruise that departed Galveston last Thursday, experienced an engine room fire on Sunday morning and has been without propulsion in the Gulf of Mexico since that time. The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was successfully extinguished. Fortunately, there were no injuries to guests or crew members.

Earlier this evening, the first of two tugboats arrived and is tied up to the ship with the second expected in the early hours of Tuesday morning. We had originally planned to tow the ship to Progreso, Mexico, the closest port to the ship’s location early Sunday. Since that time, the ship has drifted about 90 miles north due to strong currents. This now puts the ship nearly equidistant to Mobile, Alabama and given the strength of the currents, it is preferable to head north to Mobile, rather than attempt to tow against them. We now expect to arrive in Mobile sometime on Thursday, roughly the same time the ship would have arrived in Progreso given the distance the ship has traveled. From there, we will provide the necessary transportation to get our guests home. Mobile also provides simpler re-entry, particularly for the 900 guests onboard traveling without passports.

We have maintained constant contact with the ship’s officers. All of our guests are safe, and we’re doing everything we can to make them as comfortable as possible.

All guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund for the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience, discomfort, and frustration our guests are feeling. We know they expected a fantastic vacation, and clearly that is not what they received. Our shipboard and shoreside teams are working around the clock to care for our guests and get them home safely.

900 passengers do not have passports. I would have guessed the amount would have been lower. I'm surprised. At least now they will have an easier entry.

Fox News just interviewed the Captain of the Coast Guard cutter escorting the Triumph. He said both tugs had already arrived and taken the ship under tow. They were making 8 knots with favorable sea currents and if things remain the same the flotilla will arrive in Mobile Wednesday afternoon. This is much better news than the previous update which said the ship would not arrive until Thursday.

Just a little rant;

It really amazes me how many glory seekers and experts are in the National Media. It also amazes me at the DRAMA that is exploited by the Media and the amount of expertise (founded or not) that is proclaimed by witnesses.

I feel Carnival Cruise Lines is doing all that is physically possible in the situation that has arisen on the Carnival Ship Triumph. No one has a magic wand or a transporter that can magically whisk people to the next port. Carnival, in my opinion, has stepped above and beyond taking care of their passengers as well as possible and some of the horror stories are just STORIES to gain their little piece of media time.

With that being said, I'm sure life is NOT pristine and hardships are being endured by all, not just the elitist but as well as crew and the general population. I'm sure if Carnival had a instant fix they would by any means incorporate it instantly. No one is in danger, no one is going to die, and I'm sure that we as an entitled public can survive (i'd ***** but I'd survive.)

I truly wish all the passengers, crew, assist ships, Coast Guard, and all else involved a speedy resolve in this unfortunate situation.

This issue with the passports for US Citizens totally confuses me.
Surely they would need a passport to visit the ports on this cruise or am I mistaken in thinking that US citizens can enter the said ports without passports?
Being from Canada I cannot understand the reluctance of some US citizens to get a passport. It is the ultimate in identification and allows for ease of travel around the world
What are you scared of people? Get a passport.
