Has anyone traveled on Carnival recently that has to have a gluten free diet? We will be taking a cruise in April and my mother-in-law has to have a gluten free diet. Just wondering how good Carnival is at trying to meet needs.

For your cruise I would suggest contacting specialneeds@carnival.com
with the sail date/booking number/passenger name that will need the special diet on board. The dining room should be able to accomodate your needs once they have been given the heads up.
Keep the emails you sent/receive from special needs and visit with the MD or AMD for your dining room the day you board to confirm everything is understood.

I have to say that they are EXCELLENT. On my last two cruises on Carnival Glory and Imagination (January '13) the assistant maitre 'd went over the next days menu with me each evening, arranged gluten free chocolate melting cake, I always had gluten free bread and the staff in the lido would either know or ask if I asked if something was gluten free or not.
I agree with Phil to let special needs know. The cruises were last minute for me and I did not let them know but the first night at the Your Time Dining podium I let them know I was gluten free and it was fine from then on. I really have to commend Carnival on how well they did this. I was on Millennium in December and I did notify their special needs department about my diet and their response was: "Our menus items are labeled gluten free." Yes: They are but they go no farther than that. The buffet staff were clueless and would not even check to see if a soup was gluten free. Gluten free bread was a "supposed" option in Anytime Dining but I only received it once and it came half way through the meal.
Let special needs know before your cruise and make sure you speak with the maitre 'd or assistant maitre 'd on the first night of your cruise and I doubt you'll have any problems.
