Debit card transactions
:roll:Hi y'all. Boy, I just got the shock of my life with an additional 595.00 pending in my acct all from Carnival Cruises. Yes, now I realize how and why they do this; however, I believe the policies surrounding this need to be handed out at the sail n sign point. In my case, my bank would rack up overdraft charges even though the other charges are listed as "pending". But the cruise we took on the Conquest was the bomb!

Altho we use the Carnival Fun Points credit card on all of our charges with them and have not experienced this issue, there is this on the Carnival site....
"For your convenience, charges for most of your onboard purchases will be posted to your Sail & SignŽ account. A required application form will be included with your documents. Registration for this program will occur at the time of embarkation. Carnival accepts American Express, Visa, MasterCard, DiscoverŽ Network Card, Diner's Club, Optima Card and cash for deposit on your account. A deposit (ranging from $100 to $350 depending on cruise duration) will be required for cash accounts. Third-party credit cards, Travel Funds Cards, Credit Card Gift Cards and Mini Credit Cards are not accepted on board
If you are using a credit card or debit/check cashing card please be advised that there will be a hold placed on your account as a deposit for your onboard purchases. During your cruise additional holds will be added if your Sail & SignŽ account exceeds the amount of deposit Carnival has on file. If you presented a credit card, this will reduce the amount available on your credit card for other purchases. If you presented a debit/check cashing card, the hold will restrict the available cash in your checking account. All charges will be billed to the credit card or debit/check cashing card at the end of the cruise. Please note that Carnival Cruise Lines will not be held responsible for any bank-imposed overage or insufficient funds charged on debit or credit cards..."

Yes, I see this now, thank you. I still believe that this leaves too much grey area for the bank to manipulate and try to obtain over-draft fees. I am a pet groomer. How would you feel if I put a pending hold on your acct for $50+ on your debit until my $25 clears. And then because of smoke and mirrors, you don't get a reverse on the pending hold for 10 days and no one explained this to you and you continue to make purchases on what you believed you had in the acct in the first place? Fair or not? These policies should be made extremely clear at the time of sail and sign. I would chosen to do a cash account instead. Thank goodness, I had the funds to cover; yet there were in another account.

I certainly see what you are talking about, it really shouldn't take a whole 10 days to reverse the hold, doesn't seem fair...A good idea is NOT to use a debt card, but a regular credit card when traveling...Yes, I have heard the same hold goes on those as well, but at least you personally are not out any funds while the expences clear....Funny, when using my debt card for regular daily things, it always amazes me that within seconds, the moneys are out of my account....Then, on the other hand it takes 10 days to clear....??

All merchants and companies do not process debit card transactions the same way. Some are processed as cash sales so the money is deducted from the account immediately. Others are processed as credits and a hold is placed on the account. if you access the account after such a transaction you will see your account total and then the available amount is minus the the sale amount.
