Talking Price drop vs upgrade?

Hi all. Just out of curiosity, when there is a sale and it's cheaper than what you originally paid, can you actually opt for an upgrade if it's available or can you only get a price drop? Meaning can you opt for an upgrade if available INSTEAD of taking the price drop?

I just got a $120 a cabin price drop on my upcoming Splendor cruise and was not offered an upgrade. I have not made my final payment yet. I wouldn't have taken an upgrade anyway. When I book a cruise a year or more prior to sailing, I have already selected the cabins I wanted, so even if there is another price reduction after final payment is made, I will always take the OBC. A few years ago following a price drop, they offered to swap my two adjoining balcony cabins for a Grand Suite, or give me $300 OBC. I took the OBC because I wanted the two bathrooms!!!

On a recent Carnival Pride cruise, I booked about a month out to go with some friends, and since I was sailing solo, (my wife couldn't go and gave me her blessing...still paying for it!), I booked cheap, (inside cabin with the French doors), and two price reductions later, I wound up in an Aft extended Balcony, about a 12 catagory upgrade!! So it does work both ways!!

I wonder with so many getting price drops or upgrade why we have ever yet received either on our past or upcoming cruise, is it because we do ES or have a suite?

Robin, how do you book your cruises? If you use a PVP, or do it online, you will have to monitor the rates yourself. If you use a TA, a good one should be monitoring the rates for you.

I use a very good PVP when booking my Carnival cruises, but I still have to monitor the rates myself. He is quick to call me with specials and such that I may be interested in, but PVP's work for the company, so they aren't going to alert you to price drops. When he contacts me about specials, such as the current Friends and Family fares, it is his indirect way of alerting me to possible price drops.

As a rule, the lowest and highest cabin catagories are the first to sell out. Once a catagory sells out, there is no way to compare rates anymore. BUT, a catagory that is sold out may become available due to cancellations, upgrades, etc. so you need to keep checking, especially when there is some sort of sale going on.

Hope this info helps.

So I guess what everyone is saying is that I can't CHOOSE either/or? It's just the luck of the draw??

Just to clarify, the info I gave above is assuming that you have booked at an ES rate.
If you submit, or your TA submits an ES Price Protection Claim Form prior to final payment, you will be given a price drop, thereby reducing the amount of final payment. If the form is submitted after final payment, you choose if you want the price reduction in the form of an upgrade,(if available), or an OBC.

Ah ok, so it's a an after final payment thing and yes, I will be booking the ES rate. That makes sense. Thanks again.

Unless the special is 'for new bookings only', your agent can get the price reduction no matter the fare code if it happens before final payment due date. After that date, only those with the Early Saver fare code can request a reduction and that amount will be given as an onboard credit.
