Carnival Sunshine not quite ready?
 
We are getting reports that Carnival Sunshine is not quite ready - that many of the staterooms do not have running water, that a good portion of the waterworks and fun zone are not ready.

Not that I am surprised - it is not unusual for a new ship to have problems.

I recall that Norwegian Epic had an enormous number of problems, including having me showering in the men's gym for two days because all I gad was hot water.

What stories have you heard, and would you be upset of it was your cruise?

I saw a report that the main swimming pool was closed because of a 'technical issue', which probably means the filtering or pumping systems are not functioning.

Going on the first cruise after a shipyard overhaul is always going to be a roll of the dice. Some may think the ship ought to be 100% when cleared to leave the yards, but given that any large vessel is an extremely complex machine it is impossible for it to ever be problem-free. However, it is the degree of problems that makes the difference. A pool not working is a minor issue. Basic hotel services such as stateroom water are significant. There is no excuse for all the cabins to not have both hot and cold water. That is a basic check-off on any shipyard punchlist.

I had two couples who were suppose to be on the first sailing after dry dock. But three weeks before their cruise, Carnival decided that in response to the huge problems encountered by the Triumph, they were going to keep it in dry dock for an extra month to add new redundant back-up power supplies, among some other essential items to try and prevent those problems from occurring again. Needless to say, my clients were extremely irritated that 3 weeks before their cruise, they had to redo all their plans (time off from work, airline reservations, hotel reservations, excursions, etc.). Carnival did provide them a 25% reduction on their next cruise as well as refunding them the airline change fees. But this was what Carnival said was a one-time itinerary and included stops they wanted. So now they are going in the Fall instead of the Spring and they're getting one less day plus missing a port they really wanted.

I've always been one who does not like nor suggest the first cruise on a new ship or the first cruise out of dry dock because of the very reasons the Sunshine has encountered. It just takes a couple of weeks to iron out all the problems, get the staff to become a cohesive group, and insure a care-free cruise. Plus, it gives a bumper period just in case the ship is delayed in getting into service.

Experienced cruisers may be aware booking a new ship or one just overhauled is a risk, unfortunately not everyone is aware of that fact. It's not like it is posted on the website or if you call and book they will warn you. Since that is the case passengers are right to expect a 100% working ship just like any other week.

I've been on a number of Inaugural cruises and were scheduled to be on the April 12th Carnival Sunshine cruise. Oh well. Ship happens.

I would love to be on the ship right now, but as it is, we won't board for another 9 days.

Can't wait!

I agree with what everyone has said about booking 1st cruise....Wild Bill is the brave one.

Of course the cruise line is not going to tell you this - they want you to book the cruise and they're not going to give you any information that would change your mind - they just want to sell you a cruise. And if you are booking directly with the cruise line, you'd better have a deck plan in front of you because they also don't care where your cabin is and won't tell you it's below a noisy area or next to an elevator. But this is why it's so important for people, especially first-time cruisers, to use an agent as they will look after you and give you information the cruise line will not provide.

I booked the Bloggers Cruise (Carnival Sunshine) while on Carnival Elation last February and the agent went out of her way to point out why I might not like the cabin I had pre-selected and showed me the deck plan. I chose a different cabin. She also checked all available prices to make sure I was getting the best deal.

Finally, she even let my regular travel agent have credit for the booking and take it over.

I couldn't ask for better service AND I got the $100 OBC.

There are many stories on the cruise boards about people getting crappy service from travel agents as well as PVPs, with some of the travel agents adding change fees and cancellation fees of their own.

If you don't expect everything to be perfect, you won't be disappointed. :p

Med cruises are especially port intensive with long excursions. The ship is simply to get you from port to port and somewhere to store your luggage and all the crap that you buy. Summers are too hot and too many kids.

Besides, I have a solar powered battery charger and no problem with primitive camping. rofl

You got a good future cruise representative on the ship - that's exactly what they're suppose to do. But as you pointed out, not all of them are as competent. Same can be said with PVP's and travel agents. Or auto mechanics, dentists, lawyers, or plumbers for that matter. Unfortunately, there are always a few that give a bad name to the profession. That's why it's always good to ask alot of questions and get referrals. But the bottom line is about booking directly with the cruise line, and I don't care how outstanding the PVP is, if you have any problems, they represent the cruise line and not you. They will look after their best interest and not yours. It's when problems arise where an agent can be worth their weight in gold. But yes, it has to be a good agent because like any profession, there are those who are only out to make a buck and not provide good service.
