Default Bob Dickinson

Look for an announcement from Carnival soon.

Looks like Uncle Bob is returning as a special consultant. I wonder what changes may be in store.

Welcome back Uncle Bob! Now if they could just get Vicki Freed back the team would be complete, but doubt if that is going to happen. Word I have heard is that Cahill is on his way out the door. Just hope that this helps get Carnival back on the right path.

Hopefully his presence, and his words, will take a bit of the sting away, from what has been going on. Someone with common sense needs to step in,and if heaven forbid, some new emergency comes down the pike....Bob will be there, not at a basketball game.

I much preferred Carnival when Bob Dickinson was there - don't like them now that it's run by 'bean counters' who have no idea how to run a cruise line.

Check out the story; Carnival Corp. taps Dickinson as special consultant

Unfortunately, they're bringing him back as a marketing and sales consultant - which means they want him to help them sell cruises, not as someone who can help improve the brand. That's too bad as I believe Bob has alot to offer Carnival.

Gee, that's quite a coincidence; week before last my Blog was about Carnival Cruisemates Blog Carnival ? Floundering Or Rebounding ? Kuki

And in it I referred to, and reposted my interview with Bob Dickinson, when we happened to run into each other last July on the Carnival Breeze.

Bob definitely knew the business, his book Selling The Sea, was/is a must read for those in the cruise industry.

As an aside, when CruiseMates first began, our very first group cruise was a "Cruise With Bob" where he met with, dined with, and generally spent time with our group.

From that time, until he retired, he was always a friend to CruiseMates.

I agree its a good thing he is back, but very disappointed its only as marketing/PR/sales.

I like Trips reference to basketball!! While the ship was in trouble, Micky was at our basketball stadium tweeting his Heat. Really out of touch!

Altho he is not doing what many think he should, it is hard to say Cahill should go.....demoted yes.

Marketing should be left alone. They have marketshare and people know they are there. Their problems lie in pax confidence in the ships safety.

Major changes in the way the ships operations - engineering- is overseen and the actual shipboard mechanics, engineers and safety inspections need to be under daily inspection. The inspections and personnel performace reports of the engineering department should be made public monthly.

I think a lot of people who sail Carnival were willing to tolerate the cutbacks in MDR and enertainment but adding the safety issues that continue to plague them it whats broke the camels back.
It's too bad they don't work on what's broke instead of doing a smoke and mirrors act.

In the corporate world the word "special" is usually not a good thing.

"Special" Consultant = Hatchet Man
"Special" Projects = Usually reserved for someone who has displayed incompetence in their current position and is being transitioned and encouraged to seek opportunity elsewhere.

I know he will be doing an overall assessment and my guess is that, in the end, Cahill will be put in charge of "Special" Projects.

Take care,
Mike

RE / Bob coming back into a more active role, I for one think regardless of what his title may be, he will be coming back to " mind the store " so to speak and would venture to guess it wouldn't be too long before you begin to see some positive changes in Carnival.
I think there's little doubt that he knows the business from top to bottom and will be a positive influence wherever he needs to be.

If I remember correctly, I did mention some time back that maybe they needed to convince Bob to come out of retirement and my comments weren't recieved too well on the board here by some but now it may appear Mickey has finally wised up a bit.
I personally believe Cahill needs to find a position, or have one assigned to him for which he is better suited than trying to run Carnival.
Just my opinion, which matters to no one but me. And too, whether Carnival goes broke or shoots back to the top , it won't have any affect me but I would like to see them doing well and see people re-gain their confidence in Carnival.

Uncle Bob is not coming back to run Carnival. Looks like he will primarily be sucking up to Travel Agents and trying to attract more first time cruisers.

Don't forget, Cahill was CFO under Uncle Bob.

Until recently, Uncle Bob was still on the Board of Directors of Carnival but for political reasons no longer is.

I don't see it as a long term relationship or that he will show up with a pocket full of miracles.

I don't see a long term stay for Cahill either unless things improve

Needs to be done since they cut commissions. Lot's of TA's now booking clients on other lines and the recent bad PR is a lethal combination allowing the TA's to do so without any question from clients.

He will--just give him a little time. Just the fact he is back, in whatever position, will do a lot to improve moral and restore confidence not only in loyal Carnival cruisers but employees as well.

I'm surprised at the amount of employees expressing their appreciation of his return. Explains why this giant took a nosedive.

The thing about Bob is that he was all about the product. His philosophy was basically to create a product, make it something nice that people will want, then market it appropriately. And he believed in keeping the passengers happy. If the passengers are happy, they'll be loyal to the brand and keep coming back.

Nowadays, the 'bean counters' have taken over - they don't care as much about the product or in keeping the passengers happy. They're all about the bottom line and how to make the most profit. The thing they don't understand is that by continuing to follow the path they've laid out, in the end, they'll not make as much profit. When the passengers aren't happy, they'll take their business elsewhere.

Bottom line, loyal passengers spend more money on cruises than first timers. It's the loyal passengers that buy balconies and suites.

Lee Iaccoca was another visionary in this regard. Both Bob & Lee understood the importance of doing whatever was necessary to create a quality brand and to immediately take care of any problems their customers had. They would do whatever was necessary to keep the customer happy because they'll be loyal to the brand and keep coming back.

As Lee Iaccoca said (and I'm paraphrasing here); it takes a lifetime to gain the trust of a customer, but only seconds to lose it.

The basic difference is that these 'been counters' are so interested in the numbers, they forget to show any interest in the customers.

About the only difference between the two is that Uncle Bob has a personality (available at any WalMart :-)). He certainly doesn't come with a pocketful of miracles.
