Question Belize -pier or tender

We were last in Belize many years ago and the ship weighed anchor what seemed quite a bit off shore. Looking now Belize is not listed as a tender port. Is there a pier there now?

Belize is still the long tender ride port.

Not sure where you are looking, but Belize is still a tender port.

Thanks all. I thought the itinerary of Carny's website usually indicated which ports are tendered. Maybe I was just thinking of "another cruise line"

NCL is going to develop a port in southern Belize.

While I understand the reason why to build one. Not thrilled tho due to the environmental impact. Belize is so beautiful and largely unspoiled.

We have heard talk of a pier there, but haven't had any recent information on it....I think it will take years to complete, even if it ever happens, same with Grand Cayman??

The NCL port is being promoted as Eco-friendly and may be located outside the reef.

Norwegian Cruise Line to develop eco-friendly destination in Belize - Charlotte cruise ships | Examiner.com

Carnival gave $ to the gov't years ago for pier just south of Belize City and that went into the pocket of the PM. When the new gov't was elected they asked for the $ again. Carnival wisely said forget it. Then the gov't wanted another $1 a head tax, that was the real reasons for the tender situations in the past. Carnival was ready to drop them as a port.

I think they might have once you are booked. I do see an indication on the actual cruise docs.

They are buying an island and turning it into a port. Keeps the passengers captive. One way or another they would still need a boat ride to get to the mainland and would be further from Belize City.

Call me a skeptic but, I still find it hard to believe that a pier going anywhere could be "green" But if they aren't tearing up the reef well let's hope

Yes very smart on their part. They will keep more of the $ close. Similar to the private islands in eastern Caribbean. And tendering to mainland will be so much easier from dock to dock.

FWIW, this is one port that I think it pays to have Carnival excursion booked. When tendering this port on our last cruise we had FTTF but found our wait to be quite long still for tendering as all of the CCL excursions were first on the tenders which was quite a few people and full tenders before they started with the Platinum and FTTF folks. I wonder how long those without excursions or priority tender were having to wait.

Returning to Belize in December and looking forward to making plans, I really enjoy this country.... go figure!
