Default Insurance

Am sure the answer has been posted before. We have been on 14 cruises but and never have purchased travel insurance but since we are getting up in years, it might be a good to do so.

We are sailing in Jan2015 to Mexico so does anyone recommend a good travel insurance company? I think that CCL has it but way to expensive.

It's never a good idea to purchase insurance through the cruise line. Go to insuremytrip.com, and type in your particulars,and, ths will give you the ability to get side by side, comparisons for many carriers.

You will also have the ability to speak with an agent if what you are seeing, gets confusing. The medical is very important..we had to use it...trip interruption and baggage loss as well. Your travel agent should be able to advise you on these companies,

You will see the cost pp, is not that expensive and it will give you peace of mind...rolling the dice at any age without travel insurance, is a gamble. Knowing you have it,and hoping you never use it, is what it's all about. Let us know how you make out.

I agree with everything Trip said, but be careful with using insuremytrip.com. While the information can be helpful, keep in mind that best price is not always best deal and biggest name does not mean best policy. The customer service provided after the sale is the most important thing and we've fired some big name companies because they did not provide good customer service to our clients.

So talk to your agent as they will usually have a company they work with and trust to provide a good product at a good price.

But do NOT purchase the insurance through the cruise line.

I never buy travel insurance but do maintain redundant world wide medical policies, including evacuation.

I would have to strongly disagree about never buying insurance throught the cruise line. Cruise line insurance is group insurance and is not age dependent. For elderly passengers, I would strongly recommend comparing prices. The older one gets, the more expensive trip cancellation insurance (and the rest) is, when on an individual policy.

I can also practically guarantee no two insurance policies are identical so be sure to read the fine print. It can be difficult to obtain the full policy until after purchase. What's wrong with that picture?

While I will agree that for some seniors purchasing travel insurance through the cruise line can definitely be a cheaper proposition, you really have to be careful of the various amounts of the coverage, as it may not be as much as you want or need. (Best price is not always best deal.) Plus, as with any insurance policy, you'll want to make sure it covers your specific situation. And lastly, you'll want to check out the actual insurance company that is underwriting the policy. Remember, it's not the cruise line that's providing the insurance - they are simply offering the policy from another company. So if you have a claim, you won't be contacting the cruise line, you'll have to get in touch with the insurance company directly.

As you can see, travel insurance is something most people recommend - rightfully so. But it can be a confusing issue since there are so many different companies and so many different policies from which to choose. And most travelers usually only have experience with one or two insurance companies while traveling once a year and most of them have luckily never had to file a claim, so their personal experiences are relatively limited. This is why it's so important to talk to your agent. Don't mean to keep repeating this, but an agent who has been doing this for a long time has a great deal of experience with various companies and know which ones they feel comfortable with after selling thousands of policies and assisting in many claims. It's very often not so much about the product itself, but the service after the fact when needed that defines how good a travel insurance company is.

And I'm not going to mention any names either pro or con, but the overwhelming majority of complaints come from people who purchased their insurance as a package while purchasing their airline tickets or cruise tickets instead of doing the insurance independently.

And another point, it should NEVER be difficult to get a copy of the entire policy before purchasing. If it is, then I would highly suggest looking at another policy. You never want to buy anything until you know exactly what you're getting.

True, the cruise lines are not in the insurance business and are just reselling.

One can always purchase additional individual insurance in any area where a policy might be deficient.

Most people don't read the policies (or cruise contracts) much less think to ask for them, but typically the policies seem to be sold based on the highlights and not the fine print.

I don't purchase trip insurance any more because the one time I could have used it to bail from a cruise, after serious thought, I went on the cruise anyway.

I think the most important point is to make sure you have medical coverage (Medicare won't apply outside of the country). A medical emergency can easily bankrupt many/most people.

One gotcha on luggage insurance is that if there is a loss, many insurers will want you to provide an itemized list of everything in the luggage and will only pay a depreciated value. A few do better.

Since St Thomas us a US territory, our medicare was taken...a day before St Maarten, and 2 days later, in Nassau, it would have been a different story.

As I have mentioned before...that sailing, where we were disemembarked, in St T, with a 4 day hospital stay, I was able to purchase a years insurance for the two of us, on a FB flash sale with a carrier, for under $9.00.... yes you read it right....the cost of the nurse they brought down from Miami to fly us home, hubby and nurse in first class, was $9,000.00!

I would think San Juan should also be covered.

Not entirely unrelated, but you wouldn't need a passport to fly from the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico to the mainland.

As I always tell people, you hope purchasing the travel insurance is a waste of your money, because if you need it, it's usually not for a good reason. But it's one of those things that if you need it, you're damn glad you've got it! (Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.)

We had to cancel a 2 week European trip that included a 7-night river cruise, which wasn't cheap. Our son, who lived with us, developed chest pains literally a few hours before we were scheduled to fly out. Luckily, it wasn't too serious, but he ended up having his gallbladder removed. Needless to say, we were really glad we had the insurance because they covered 100% of our out-of-pocket expenses.

We've been lucky in that we always purchase the travel insurance, but this was the only time we've ever really needed it. Needless to say, we would have lost alot of money had we not had it.

We do not really have a travel agent, we normally make our own reservations and such so contacting a agent won't work for us.

Last year we booked an Alaska cruise for May of this year and was talked into buying insurance through CCL. I had Surgery in January and we decided that we would cancel our Alaska trip so we did it far enough in advance that we received a full refund but not the cost of Insurance, so contacted our rep from CCL and he told me to contact the insurance company which is Berkeley Care Insurance @ (800) 331-2796 which I did and they sent me 4 pages to complete and then return them plus Doctors statement . Needless to say, it wasn't worth my time so lost the premium paid.

Obviously, I'm prejudiced on the matter, but you should always book with an agent. They don't charge any fees, their prices will be the same or sometimes lower, but most importantly, they work for you. Should you have any problems and booked directly with the cruise line, who do you think they represent? An agent has resources not available to you and their help can be invaluable. Plus, they are familiar with all the cruise lines, so they can provide information an options that calling one cruise line won't provide. And lastly, when calling the cruise line, you're talking to someone who; 1) works in a call center, 2) is not a certified travel agent, 3) has worked for the company for less than 6 months, and 4) has never been on a cruise. So they have absolutely nothing to offer other than to sell you something. If you're going to pay the same rate or less, it always makes sense to do business with someone who wants to work for you and make you happy. After all, it's like any other small business, they want you to use them again and they want you to refer them to your family and friends.

But back to the matter of travel insurance, some of those sold by the cruise line won't reimburse you for any of your other out-of-pocket expenses unless booked through the cruise line. So if you booked independent airfare, it may not be covered. Just another reason why independent insurance is better. But as was said earlier, that's why it's always best to talk to an agent and to make sure you're getting something that covers everything you need to protect.

As as example, Carnival's policy, which is now underwritten by Stonebridge Casualty, has one paragraph you need to be very aware of;

Carnival will not waive their cancellation fee and provide a cash refund, should you cancel or interrupt your cruise vacation for any of the following reasons: a condition that first presents, worsens, becomes acute, or has symptoms causing a person to seek diagnosis, care or treatment, or prompts a change in medication, during the 60 days before the Cancellation Fee Waiver Program is purchased.

So, if you got sick 6 weeks before you purchased the insurance, then got sick again from the same thing after purchasing it and needed to cancel, it would not be covered.

A policy we sell does not have this caveat. This is why it's so very important to read the policy beforehand because all of them are different. Theirs only covers up to $30,000 for evacuation. Sounds like alot, but my son was in an automobile accident and had to be taken by helicopter to a trauma center about 15 miles away. Cost was $13,000. You can imagine if you're in an area not covered by the Coast Guard how much that cost may be and all of a sudden, $30k doesn't sound like much. Ours, as an example, is $1million. Obviously, a little overkill, but better to have more than you need than not enough.

Anyway, if I can impress one thing about travel insurance it's to talk to someone who knows about what they're selling, get a copy of the policy and read it carefully, and if you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to call the insurance company. But do not base your decision totally on how much it costs because that can end up costing you alot in the end.

Surely something to think about. We did use a travel agency one time a long ago but we could have got the same price directly through the cruise line.

Like the cruise we just set up for Jan of next year, we got a casino offer for 100.00 each and I am not sure an travel agency could have offered that. Maybe so. we first went online with the code and looked at the rate then went back into the site with the code and saw the casino offer. I know went off subject and will shop for travel heath coverage through an insurance company. I checked on this one tonight.

You can book with a cruise line,and transfer the booking to a travel agent. Most seasoned cruisers know exactly what they want as they pick up the phone to a travel agency. Having a service that does not charge you, but supports you, is just a smart consumer bonus.

One of my emergency medical policies that kicks in anytime I am more than 150 miles from my home is an annual policy that include $100k evacuation and my cost is under $10/month.

yes I think you are right, you are bias.

The one time I booked with a TA and had a problem the day of embarkation they were closed for the weekend.

If they would have been working for me they would have had somebody in the office or provided a number to call.

I prefer to book myself and buy my own insurance through insuremytrip.com

While it's true you don't get the policy until you buy the insurance you have 10 days to review and cancel if you so desire.

A good reputable agent is there when you need them. Guess you booked with the wrong agent.

The question is finding the reputable travel agent. i know they are out there and i am sure you were/are one but how many do you have to go through before you find a good one?

I don't know other people that cruise so can't get recommendations there.

Just as there is no perfect cruise line there is no perfect insurance policy, just more confusing ones.

Price is not everything but what is the best value for one may not be the best value for someone else.

All the more reason to mix and match individual insurance components to get exactly what you want - or as close as possible.

Always buy 3rd party insurance...you can go to insureytrip.com and after entering your pertinent info, get side by side price comparisons....Another layer of information is to discuss this with your travel agent.

It makes good sense to get some insurance while on a cruise. I would check out VacationSecure.com .They’d have a list of insurance providers with tips on how to choose the best ones.
