Default Cheers Package?

What has your experience been? We will have two days at sea and two days in port. I can drink a ton, but I'm not sure the wife would get her money's worth. I know people try to smuggle stuff on, but I've heard it's pretty much a 50/50 shot at getting past security.

Do you think it is worth it to get the package? If you would prefer to chat off of this forum, let me know, and we can work out a way to chat.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Spoon,

Many people buy these drink packages and feel they are worth it. They don't match our style, but to each his own.

In your case it sounds like the Cheers package might work for you but your wife should buy drinks a la carte.

Thanks for the reply,

That's my whole problem. The wife doesn't drink nearly as much as I do. The package requires everyone in the stateroom to buy the package or it's not available. We either both buy it, or neither of us buy it.

While Carnival does not allow only one in a cabin to purchase Cheers, other cruise lines do (specifically RCCL). Unless you are married to CCL , you might want to try another line so you can drink to your hearts content without wasting drinking money on your wife.

I guess you have to do the math. If you book the package in advance, it is $49.95 per person in the cabin, per day. I consider purchasing it before each cruise, but I carry cans of coke, one bottle of wine per person on board and purchase 12 small bottles of water to be delivered to the room. I could bring cans of beer instead of coke or a mix of the two (cans only), but I seem to always carry my wine home unopened. Two rum punches a day are enough for me, so about $20 a day including gratuity. I understand they control who gets the drinks in order to avoid having drunk passengers running around, as well as having a cap on the number of drinks allowed per person. IMHO, do the math.

You use to be able to bring beer onto a Carnival cruise, but that policy has changed;

"For safety reasons, Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board with the following exception: At the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day, Guests (21 years of age and older) may carry on in their hand luggage, one 750 ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne per person. A $15 corkage fee (a charge exacted at a restaurant for every bottle of wine served that was not bought on the premises), per 750 ml bottle, will be charged should Guests wish to consume their wine or champagne in a main dining room, steakhouse or bar. Guests are also prohibited from bringing water, sodas and other non-alcoholic beverages on board that are packaged in bottles. A small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages (i.e., sparkling water, sodas, juice, milk) packaged in cans or cartons may be brought on board on embarkation day, only if carried on in Guests’ hand luggage (not in checked luggage). A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 12 ounces each or less per person. Any hard liquor, beer, other forms of alcoholic beverage, and non-alcoholic beverages, outside of the exceptions referenced above, are strictly prohibited (in both carry-on and checked luggage) and such items will be confiscated and discarded and no compensation will be provided."

As others have stated, if only one person in the cabin drinks, or the second person drinks very little, then it would probably pay you not to get the beverage package. Also, as someone mentioned, try another cruise line, such as RCCL, that does not require both occupants to get the beverage package. When you add up all the expenses, you may find this a cheaper option.

I would put $500 deposit on your sale and sign card and then your drinks are covered up to that amount. That way she is not wasting the money and you have paid "In advance" and then if you don't use it, you get it back!! If you go over, you night consider the cheers program next cruise!!
