We use to use two-way radios when the kids were younger and they worked great! They were also helpful when we were in port, especially when at the cruise line's private island/beach.

We also used them when we were going on a trip to the beach and had to take two cars.

But here's the main thing about using two-way radios on a ship; keep in mind there are ALOT of wires, metal walls, and other things that will interfere with the signal. Even with a really powerful set, you will not get much range at all. So, do not get cheap ones - they will not work. Make sure you get ones that have about a 30-mile range. Anything less and you may very well find them to be a waste of your money. You can find decent ones for about $40-$45 at Sam's or Costco.

While on the ship?

If offered on your ship, consider the Carnival Fun Hub App. The "chat" feature i think is $5/cruise.
