Anyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE Celebrity Cruiseline. But, to date, we have only done two cruises with Celebrity. Our third cruise is January 7, 2001.
I'm interested in knowing how many cruises you folks have taken on Celebrity........
We have been on three....Bermuda (1997), Panama Canal (1999) both on the Zenith; and last summer to the Baltic Sea on the Millennium. We are headed to Alaska August 2001 on the Infinity.
All three have been wonderful and we look forward to Alaska next summer.
Mercury West Coast Inaugural 1998 (Los Angeles/Vancouver 10 days)
Galaxy repositioning 1999 (Los Angeles/San Juan 17 days)
Millennium Eastern Med 2000 (11 days) Picture is coming into Malta at 6AM
Infinity is booked for May 1 10 days San Francisco/Vancouver
Hopefully I will be able to do 1 a year for a long time to come.
I have only been on 1, the Century in 1996, but I have never forgotten what a great time I had. I am sailing on the Millennium January 14-21. I can't wait to thaw out! We are only in the single digits-teens today in Pittsburgh!!
I love Celebrity also. Taking 7th cruise with them on Millennium Jan. 7th. Been on Century: Nov.,1996; June, 1997; Sept., 2000 (East & West Caribbean)
Horizon: Jan., 1998; Jan., 2000 (Southern Caribbean)
Zenith: Aug., 1999 (Bermuda)
Oh yes, toured & had lunch on Mercury when she made her debut at Port Everglades. Beautiful ship.
Hi "Smile": I am originally from Pgh. (Squirrel Hill & Shadyside), but now live in Fla. Mary Lou also lives in Pgh. Too bad you are not going on cruise with us Jan. 7th. Have a wonderful time on your sailing. I know we will also.
December 1998 Galaxy Southern Caribbean, September 1999 Horizon to Bermuda (dodged 2 hurricanes successfully!), and August 2000 Galaxy Inside Passage. Getting set to leave in 2 weeks on the Century West Caribbean!
I also have a Pittsburgh connection--I was born at Allegheny General and my mother grew up on Mt. Washington and my father in Wilkinsburg! Grew up in upstate NY but most relatives still in Pittsburgh area.
Smile:
As Cindy said, I live in Pittsburgh too. Where do you live? Too bad you aren't booked on the Milli on Jan. 7 with Cindy and I. Maybe we can wave to each other as we are geting off and your are boarding.....you'll know me, I'll be the one they are forceably removing from the ship (I hate to leave those ships, ha ha)!
I agree with you about these single digit temperatures we have been experiencing....will really make us enjoy our cruises that much more! Happy sailing!
My family and I have done 7 cruises on Celebrity and we go all the way back to the Chandris days, we are currently booked on Infinity to Alaska in June but are thinking about cancelling it to do 12 days in europe in june on Legend Of The Seas.
We have only been on the Mercury. It was the best cruise we've ever taken. Booked another cruise on the Mercury. We also have booked on the Infinity and the Summit but will do only one of these. Not sure yet which one.
CENTURY inaugural season May 1996, Eastern Caribbean.
MERCURY inaugural season November 1998, Western Caribbean
HORIZON April, 1999 10 day Southern Caribbean
MERCURY April 2000 14 day trans Canal
Hopefully, Millie, Fall, 2001
I am in McKeesport. While they are prying your fingers from the ship, I will be the one with the big grin. But I guess everyone boarding will have a grin!
Can't believe that two short weeks from today....I will be the one with the grin boarding Milli......as long as we can fly out of Pittsburgh....keep you fingers crossed for me!!!! Only three weeks for you!!!!!
Have a wonderful Holiday!!!
Seriously, folks; I'm not here to start an argument, but I've been on two Celebrity cruises in the past two years, and here's how I'd rate the line:
Ships and cleanliness: Excellent
Activities: Very Good
Food: Very good, but not as good as their ads would indicate
Entertainment: Lounge shows were Good to Very good
Dining room staff: fair to good
I was on the 11/26 Mercury sailing from Ft. Lauderdale to Caracas, on which the Celebrity staff stranded a couple of hundred people for a day or more, because they mishandled the baggage destined for the airport. They also required 300 people without passports to meet with the US Ambassador, because they didn't recognize a potentially huge problem in Ft. Lauderdale, when it was determined that the people didn't have passports. I didn't have a problem, but I was lucky.
In my opinion, Celebrity is a good value, but they've got a way to go to live up to their advertising. Try a couple of other lines for comparison purposes.
Maybe it's just a sign of the times, but if we were to seriously expect any company to live up to its advertising, would we ever buy anything?
I mean, to look at ads for fast food places, you'd think the food is really good and good for you. We know it's not good at all, and that these places don't live up to their advertising, but we eat there anyway.
Do car most cars live up to their advertising? Do most telecomms or dot.coms or online brokers? Just because Celebrity says that they're better than all the rest, do we really expect that to be true? I've never been on Crystal or any of the other super-deluxe lines, but I'm willing to believe that overall, they're better than Celebrity, thereby making Celebrity's slogan untrue. Does that bother me? No.
That's because I've determined that much of the time, Celebrity represents a value proposition. The best product for a reasonable cost. I have tried a number of other lines and read the price lists for the rest, and that's where I've landed. Of course, I'm completely open minded and am anxious to evaluate any suggestions from those who know the business.
Ultimately, we have to base our buying decisions on our own view of value, plus the views of others we respect. If that doesn't add up to Celebrity for you, that's fine. But don't blame them for putting their best foot forward in their advertising. That's just the American way.
Very perceptive of you and I quite agree. It's advertising and nothing more. There are thousands (ok, scores) of examples within the cruise industry alone. I could search through my stack of cruise line brochures and critique each one of them for "accuracy" no doubt. In any case, maybe I'm from a generation that just doesn't take advertising very seriously or at its word. In short, having sailed on it 3 times, I think Celebrity is a very good product, good value, which appeals to my particular tastes.
This will be our second cruise on Celebrity--the first one on Zenith in 1995. We cruised Carnival in 1999 and will be on the Millie Jan. 7. It will be interesting to see how she compares. I'm sure we'll love it though.
I've sailed aboard every ship, twice on Mercury. Two days on Millennium, was supposed to take the crossing but a personal emergency at the last minute. Now I'm cruising the ship in Feb!
BTW, it's at the very top of my list of favorite cruise lines.
Well I must admit I think I have lost count. Century twice, Horizon once, Zenith eight or nine, Booked on Zenith next Oct, had to have that Royal Suite again couldn't help ourselves. Our friends Tom and Laurie who we originally met on the Zenith in 1992 sailing the Caribbean ( they were married in St.Thomas ) took the other Royal Suite. How will I live with no butler on the Explorer in June life is hard but someone has to live it.
Regarding advertising disussion. I used all of those hair things, mouth washes, bought those fancy sneakers and I still don't look like Tom Cruise, have woman chasing me down the street tearing my clothes off nor can I get the basketball in the stupid hoop. Advertising is what it is.
I've been on 34 Celebrity cruises -- first one on the Horizon in 1990. I've been on all their ships (except the Millennium). I've been on all the other cruise lines also, and think that Celebrity is the best!
