I am considering taking the Galaxy transatlantic this May, and maybe because I have seen Perfect Storm too many times, but I am a little concerned that the Atlantic might be a rough crossing. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone on a similar cruise or who otherwise might have an opinion. I know there are no guarantees on the weather. Thanks.
I have done two transatlantic crossings on QE 2 in early june, both times the seas were calm, but this ship travels at a pretty quick speed so you feel the speed not rocking. Have had much rougher sea's coming and going to Bermuda.
Winter or December crossings are where "tough"sea conditions happen often on the North Atlantic. The route the ship takes North Or South Atlantic also makes a difference.
One of my crossings we had fog for 3 days straight.
David is right. I'm kind of up there in age and when I was younger I would travel to Europe almost every summer, always by ship. I don't remember anyone getting sick. The crossing was always very nice.
The Galaxy is taking a southern atlantic route of sorts in May...from San Juan to Ponta Delgado, Azores (go see the volcanos!) and then up the coast of Europe to Spain, France, on to Amsterdam. The weather is likely to be not bad. We did a transatlantic at the end of April 1999 on the Rotterdam and went from NY to Bermuda to the Azores to Lisbon. Had some rainy weather out of NY but from Bermuda onward we had sunshine every day. Obviously the weather can be different, but you'll be sailing to the south of where we sailed. So I would say go for it! Also, I will note, the Atlantic was like a big lake the whole way over--a very smooth crossing! We have been on the Galaxy twice and absolutely love that ship as well.
Any cruise on the open seas is subject to rough weather. We have been on a
trans-atlantic crossing in the North Atlantic that was beautiful part of the time
and quite rough the other. We have also been on the South Atlantic, off the
Falkland Islands when the storm prevented the tenders from going ashore. Be
prepared, there are many motion sickness remedies now available. Just use them
and enjoy the cruise.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to my question. I am new to Message Boards and I am amazed at how generous people are with their time in answering questions from strangers. I think I will go for the transatlantic! Thanks again.
