Cozumel phone call rip off

This might not fit here, but could be useful to those on the Millennium's
western Caribbean run. We were on the cruise last week-we had a great time and we loved the ship.

On our stop in Cozumel we wanted to call home. There is a kiosk right by the pier that provides phone services. We went in placed a call home to the kids-the answering machine picked up and we left a message-the charge for the call was $1.40, which we paid in cash. We went back a while later to place two more calls, both again were to answering machines. This time, however, we placed the charges on our credit card. We just checked our card on-line and saw two charges from this phone service for $28.80!!! We called our card company and they took the charges off, save for $1.40 for each call.

If you're going to use this service, pay cash and if possible, check your credit card statement on-line.

I also know those phones are rip-offs, and I don't even remember how I learned it, but everytime I pass them I tell everyone I know not to use them.

It is true throughout the Caribbean that from almost any pay phone, when you use a credit card the first minute will be anywhere from $6.00 on up.

Just think how expensive it gets for the crew trying to call home - the calling cards also deduct a significant amount for the first minute. I have seen crew wait over an hour for a phone, because once they make a call, it is better for them to use the whole time alloted on the card.
