Default Warnings for overseas travel

I am heading out tonight for Istanbul to meet up with the Millenium. I have been listening to all the new warnings about terrorists threats. Just wondering if anyone had any words of wisdom?

Cruise ships and cruise tours will always(as much as is humanly possible)
insure your safety. Going out on your own may be asking for trouble, but I would
be optimistic and just enjoy the trip.

We just got back from the June 12th sailing a few days ago. In Istanbul we felt secure on the tours, but did note the armed guards at the palaces and Grand Bazaar, and of course, the airport. The Turkish economy is troubled and a major source of income is from tourists. (Note the visa charge.) It was my impression from the tour guides and the Turks to whom we talked that they will do what is humanly possible to protect their tourist trade. (Some of the hijacking incidents last year were from regional airports, not frequented often by most tourists, where the security may be looser.)
